For all of those confused with the storm and its direction. Well, first, its big! The center is close by Santo Domingo and the rain is to the North of that. So the winds and the rains kinda follow the center ... and are not clustered around the center as in a typical hurricane. This is is more or less why it is sub-tropical and not tropical. (Forgive me for sacrificing technical explanations for simplicity and also, the nature of the storm is changing currently to more of a tropical storm)

We will get rain over the whole island. The rains and winds are coming in from the North side mainly. Winds and rains will be in bands - strong one moment, and nothing the next moment. The winds will not be that bad (compared to a hurricane that is.) The rain is going to sift down and again rivers will overflow, low lying areas will flood, some beach areas will be eroded.

Compared to Tropical Storm Noel, that poured down up to 30 inches of rain, Olga is way down on this list, but with 10 inches of rain forecast for an already wet island, things may not look so good by tomorrow morning.

Unlike a hurricane, your roofs will probably not blow off (depending on your roof) and your house will probably not be full of water (depending on your house). People in low lying areas are at risk. Their houses will flood with rivers coming across their banks.

SantiagoDR I'm not surprised you're confused as to where the centre is - so are some of the forecasters:
STORM2K • View topic - STS OLGA in SE.DR : Discussions & Images

4pm advisory put it 'AT 500 PM AST...2100Z...THE CENTER OF SUBTROPICAL STORM OLGA WAS LOCATED INLAND OVER THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC NEAR LATITUDE 18.5 NORTH...LONGITUDE 68.8 WEST OR ABOUT 70 MILES...115 KM...EAST OF SANTO DOMINGO IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC.'

See this
Tropical Floater One Visible Imagery - Satellite Services Division

A recon aircraft has taken off to investigate, so that will give clearer info in a few hours. There appears to have been a WNW movement.

Meanwhile, raining in Puerto Plata, occasional gusts, heavier rain to come methinks.

Lambada,

That "Floater" link shows an eye just like as in a hurricane.

Nice video!

Now if the Weather Channel´s satellite image had shown the same, there would have been less confusion.

Thanks

Nagua / Matancita Report

Heavy winds more than 40 MPH, several big trees down. Road form Matancita to Nagua is not passable. A lot of power Lines down in Nagua. It will take days to get power back again here. Seems to me like jeanny in 2004

Let's hope the best. more westly of nagua the worst is still to come.
