hi Elen,
i rember you and your little sun from a e-mail/other bord ors such.
a flight into Punta Cana is at this moment not in danger.
we have even the sun back today, yes, still some clouds passing by, too,
we had 12-15knots winds in gusts during the day, actually completely quiet,
Ocean is flat like a lagoon, temps a warm 28-29C now.
here's the latest model update i found,
18:00Zulu,2PM this afternoon

o.k.,
now i am ashamed.
it took me 1 full hour to post that image.
couldn't copy&paste, don't know why.
finally i just loaded it up on a empty page of my website.
that drove me crazy.
i hope nothing important changed since i've been on that image
Mike

Default Hurricane Ike and Current Tropical Storms .. was .. Hey Chris: They're lining up

My nephew - who works for FEMA in DC- sent me an email with the following: "Ike is a major, major storm. Quantifiably, Ike is three times more powerful than Hanna and 50% more powerful now than Katrina was when it hit New Orleans. Ike's projected path now is just to the north of the DR on Sat. morning. If it strikes the DR at its current strength it could be horrendous."

He advises me to 1) scram, preferably to Las Vegas or 2) put in supplies and batten down....

Mike, I donŽt do images on my server since it was forcefully brought down by hot hotlinking DR1 members

It works better to add a link or load up to the DR1 gallery or hotlink to something where you know the servers will be up to the load.

The model run looks a little better but I would still watch and wait. We will see in the next 12 to 14 hours or so where the storm wants to head to.

forget about the 1800Z update,
here we go with the 5PM one,
and it still looks all fine.
the change to the early afternoon updates is shown on Ike's strength,
the models show him degreasing strength down to Cat2 while north of Puerto Rico,
the conditions north of Hispaniola are favorable for restrength to Cat3.
i also sorrily see that he is started to slow down his forward speed.
Mike

Goodness .. that is why IŽll update the positions at 8pm tonight. I cannot stand the stress of the Žthis way hahahah, that way hahahahah, this way hahahah, when oh when!Ž (IŽm sure there are some of you that know this Rafi kid's song?)
Current position is still 5 degrees or 300 nautical miles north of the DR.

I'm flattered Elen. I'm just posting on this thread everything I find and know because I am just as worried as you are. You save vacation days to go away and then something like this puts a burden on the trip. I'm not going to let it bring me down at all. You shouldn't either. The DR is not only known for it's beautiful blue skies and beaches. There are other riches to explore. Positive attitude! And about the flying, don't sweat it. Things will be fine :-) Like I said before, pilots have a way of getting around up there.

Edited to add: Not sure if folks are aware but www.weather.com has awesome video updates every two hours on the three storms in the Atlantic. I like that instead of the models. Models make my head hurt :-) That's for gurus like Mike, Lambada and Chris :-)

Yes for sure ... they fly around or route differently.

One day over a beer IŽll tell you the story of flying into one El Tigre

here's a nice 5PM shot on Ike
from the point of view from his Lady Josephine.
the little yellow dot on his left is named Puerto Rico.

the 2nd shot shows the visible water in range
