Question More what about windows

I live in Constanza and, though the eye will probably not hit the DR, this will be my first time in a hurricane.

My house is new, concrete roof, 2 stories, and covered in windows varying from the smal ones in toilets to the big floor to ceiling sliding things. Of course, they're all smothered in iron bars to keep Dominicanos out! This means I don't see how I can cover the windows in wood.

My best guess (based on wind predictions) is that I shouldn't worry too much in Constanza. Do any experts think I'm right? Should I do something with the windows (the only thing that comes to mind is to tape them)?

Here are some non-glossy but excellent plots. The first one is of Ike, the track and the forecast and the 2nd is of all three storms in our basin (Hanna, Ike and Josephine) from the South Florida Water Management people. I happen to have a friend who works there. Thanks Sweety!

And of course, this magnificent image of the day from Nasa.

In Constanza you have not too much to worry about.

If you live in a place like Constanza, I would not bother covering windows. But if you live on the North Coast, I would have some covering ready if not for this storm, for future storms.

Chris is right....just remember: If you close the windows that catch the breezes, open the ones opposite so pressure doesn't build up inside your house (this was some useful advice when George hit us back in '98), but that's only if Ike decides to pay us a direct visit, if not then it won't be necessary

Thanks - reassuring about Constanza. The pressure thing about opening windows is quite logical - once someone tells you - but it's entirely new to me so thanks for that too!

Seems like I just need to stock up on essentials - rum, coke, ice, blankets.

I wish you all luck, especially those on North coast!

I love the word Nifty.

If I did not wake up until 2pm on labor day I would have missed the weather report.

I use this yahoo map, as it is so accurate I can almost tell if it's time to go to the beach or the barn.

He advises me to 1) scram, preferably to Las Vegas or 2) put in supplies and batten down....

M-Annie -- where are you located (that your nephew sent you the warning)? How long ago did he e-mail you? Did you decide on your plan of action yet? I'm thinking/hoping that tomorrow I might get from NYC to POP in between the storms.
