Q: I hear the power
goes out in Santo Domingo, what happens at your place? What about water?
A: We have an inverter a device that
automatically kicks in when the power goes to provide you with electric so
blackouts never bother you. In fact, you will probably think you never had one
while staying in our apartment. Water problem is also nonexistent; we have a
back up system to provide water to the apartment in the event of power grid or
water main failure. Please be aware that some items will only work when power
from the grid is available, however, all lights, fans, fridge, computer and the
TV will continue to function as normal.
Q: How do I buy a
phone card. How many calls can I make?
A: You can buy a phone card practically on
every corner. Literally. They are sold by street vendors at major intersections
and in pretty much every store, pharmacy and supermarket in town. There is a
convenience store right in front of the apartment building that sells calling
cards. They are sold for 30, 50, 100, and 300 pesos and the quantity of minutes
that you get depend on the price of the card. Typically you will get 3 minutes
for calls within the US and 10 for long distance and calls to mobile phones
within the Dominican Rep. with a 30-peso card.
Q: How far is it to
the Colonial Zone and other important sites?
A: It is 30 minutes by car. Malecón:
20-minute drive. Las Americas International Airport: 45 - 60-minute drive.
Herrera Airport: 20-minute drive. Boca Chica: 60 - 85-minute drive Santiago:
2-hr drive.
Q: Where can I work
out?
A: You will find the Mirador Sur Park two
street south of the apartment. There you will find La Avenida de la Salud
(Health Avenue) where hundreds of residents of Santo Domingo jog, run, walk,
bike and skate-board in a 4-lane wide, 3-mile long avenue with a sea-view that
is closed to traffic in the morning and evenings.
Q: How about cleaning?
A: Our maid cleans every Tuesday and
Saturday at 10:00 AM. You don't need to be in the apartment since we provide her
with keys. After every guest leaves we do a more extensive, in-depth cleaning to
assure that every guest arrives to find the place spotless.
Q: Are linens provided
at no extra cost?
A: Yes. We provide two sets of bedclothes
for every bed. They are changed every time the maid cleans.
Q: Are utilities
included in the rental price?
A: Yes. Electricity, water, maintenance,
cable-TV and internet are included in the rental price.
Q: How safe is this
place?
A: The apartment is located in one of the
best, safest neighborhoods in town. There is a police station within 200 meters.
Only the administrator and you will have keys. The maid will use the
administrator's key to enter for cleaning and will return it to her at the end.
There is a safe in the apartment that we request you use to store your important
documents and money. We are not responsible for valuables left in the apartment,
however, we assure you that the chances of mishappenings are almost nonexistent.
Q: What happens if we
have a problem during our stay?
A: We will provide you with our phone number
(we are located in the same neighborhood) and you can contact us and we will
assist you in solving the problem in a satisfactory manner.
Q: Do we really need a
car?
A: Not necessarily. You can travel within
the city using the city cabs. They are on call 24/7 and we will provide you with
a list of reputable taxi companies that you may call.
Q: Is the kitchen
fully equipped?
A: Yes, and it has been recently
re-furnished. There is a medium-size fridge, dishwasher, range hood, stove,
microwave, kitchen utensils, pots, pans, serving plates, complete china set for
4, cutlery, placemats, tablecloths and napkins, espresso coffee maker, eating
utensils, glasses and cups, cutting boards, cleaning utensils, etc.
Q: Is there a washing
machine and a dryer?
A: Yes. There is a sink in the laundry room
and a small washing machine with spin-dry. The washing machine, however, is not
connected to the electric backup system, so its use may depend on availability
of electricity from the grid. There is also a line in the laundry room for
hanging.
Q: How about ironing?
A: We do not provide an iron and we do
request that you do not use one in the apartment. You can take your clothes to
the nearest dry cleaning service for ironing, they offer 1-hour service.
Q: Is it safe to drink
water from the tap?
A: We encourage you not to do it. We provide
you with bottled, potable water for drinking and cooking.
Q: Where can I buy
food?
A: There is a supermarket, a convenience
store and organic produce market within a few meters, you will find pretty much
anything that you need. If due to dietary restrictions you require specialty
items, please consult us. We will try our best to find out where you can
purchase it. We can also buy it for you before you arrive and you will cover the
cost plus US$10.00 for the errand.
Q: What if I don't
want to cook?
A: It couldn't be easier. There are many
restaurants within walking distance with a variety of choices of food and
prices. There are also many restaurants that deliver in this area. We will
provide you with a helpful guide that includes restaurants in the area, menus
and telephone numbers of the ones that deliver.
Q: What time can I
arrive and leave?
A: Mon-Fri between 9.00 a.m. and 8.00 p.m.
Departure: Sat-Sun between 8.00 a.m. and 1.00 p.m. Arrival time must be agreed
at least 72 hrs. prior to arrival. We may be able to accommodate you if you must
arrive or leave outside these times but you must notify us with at least a week
in advance.
Q: Can I access the
internet?
A: Yes, we offer Cable internet connection.
Upon request you will receive the equipment and software necessary to connect
using your own laptop. We will assist you if necessary.
Q: Are there any TV
channels in English?
A: Yes. Our cable-TV provider carries the
major American TV networks as well as German, British, French and Italian
channels (besides a wealth of Spanish channels).
Q: What happens when I
arrive?
A: We will meet at the apartment at the
agreed time if you have chosen to travel from the airport by your own means.
You will receive the keys to the apartment, a brief summary of what you will
find and how things work, check and sign the inventory of materials and
furniture, receive a guide to restaurants and businesses in the area, a city
map, a list of taxi companies that you may call and other helpful information.
