In Nov. 2001, 60 of us went to the Riu Merengue for the wedding of a close friend. What a blast!!
We were all treated fantastic by the staff, the bar staff were really friendly, the hotel was immaculate, as were the grounds, and the food was great!
The rooms were well appointed and nicely maintained, as well as cleaned on a daily basis by the wonderful and friendly cleaning staff.
The bar (liquer/beer/soft drinks) in your room was stocked nicely on a daily basis as well.
Lots of activities, and the convenience of walking to the Riu Mambo for dinner/drinks, and now the newly opened Riu Bachata as well.
If all the Riu hotels are as nice as the Riu Merengue, I won't be staying anywhere else when I travel to my next destination!
HIGHLY recommended!!

am wondering if anyone can comment on the stories i've heard of illegal drugs such as weed and cocaine being sold on the beaches? I was going to take my teenage son with me on vacation but am wondering if we shouldn't choose somewheree that is more secure in that regard...any info out there?

My husband and I stayed at Riu Merengue
Feb. 2004. I was violently ill on the third day of a two week stay. Hard to believe almost 2 years later people are still getting sick.
The fist day of my illness was the worst. I was vomiting and had diarrhea. I was ill for three straight days. I did not feel like myself until 6 days later. If were to fly out of the DR on the first day I could not have done it. I couldn't walk 10 feet without needing a bathroom. As another person said I wouldn't go back if you paid my flight and accommodation! Several people we spoke to at the resort were ill too, but not as severely as I was. I felt bad for my husband who couldn't leave the room (except to eat) and took care of me for three straight days. It is too bad because the beach area was beautiful - lots of shade and chairs and the resort in itself was nice. The food was disappointing. I would not recommend staying at any of the Riu hotels. I was never so glad to land on Canadian soil in all my life.

I have just returned from staying at the Riu Merengue - highly recommended excellent accommodation excellent food plenty of activities throughout the day and excellent evening entertainment. We told three children with us age 12 9 and seven all enjoyed the pool activities childrens clubs and the beach was fantastic - a holdiday not to be missed - no restrictions you can walk into the sister hotels - Riu Mambo and Riu Bachata. I have been thoroughly spoilt - will definitely return

The beach is fine raked every morning, but sea swimming is an issue you can only go out about 30 metres it's very shallow and rocky. You 30 metres is roped and they are strict about it. Going to the right handside on the beach it gets very choppy and the tide can be strong. Walking left is safe family zone.
