Good food, nice accomodations, and most important to my wife and I, FANTASTIC service! The staff at Rie Merengue were GREAT. Always willing to help with any problem and always with a smile. I found that all the people that we encountered whether in the resort, or in the towns we visited were very helpful and of good cheer. What a wonerfull country to visit!

My husband and I stayed at Riu Merengue
February 2004. I was violently ill on the third day of a two week stay. Hard to believe almost 2 years later people are still getting sick.
The fist day of my illness was the worst. I was vomiting and had diarrhea. I was ill for three straight days. I did not feel like myself until 6 days later. If were to fly out of the DR on the first day I could not have done it. I couldn't walk 10 feet without needing a bathroom. As another person said I wouldn't go back if you paid my flight and accommodation! Several people we spoke to at the resort were ill too, but not as severely as I was. I felt bad for my husband who couldn't leave the room (except to eat) and took care of me for three straight days. It is too bad because the beach area was beautiful - lots of shade and chairs and the resort in itself was nice. The food was disappointing. I would not recommend staying at any of the Riu hotels. I was never so glad to land on Canadian soil in all my life!

We've just returned from Riu Merengue and are assuming that Rand J went to a different hotel as the food was v. good and over two weeks we didn't have to eat the same thing twice.
The beach was great (with a SMALL band of stones under the breakers) and a surprising amount of fish to see if snorkelling, just don't forget to wear sandals if venturing beyond the guide ropes - those anemones looked pretty uncomfortable.
The staff rock and even the chameleons put on a show for you, scooting up and down the palm trees beyond your balcony in the morning and evenings

I just got back from RIU Merengue and have mostly positives to report. The service was great, the entertainment (shows, casino, disco). The food was not "bad"...but not very good either-repetitive even if u went ala carte). The beds in the rooms were springy and old and the beach was poor due to seeweeed and rocks after you swim out ten feet. We found the RIU Pachate to have the best pool and food. All and aqll a good time , but glad it was only one week as we were getting VERY sick of the food. We went to a second rfesort the next week (Sosua Bay) and loved it. Much less secluded than RIU's.
