We have just returned from a trip to the Dominican Republic staying at the Gran Ventana Hotel in Puerto Plata. When we arrived at the hotel reception we were greeted warmly. We had looked at previous reviews and people stated to ask for the quiet pool area rooms, which we did and within minutes we were given a very large room which was great, and very clean. One thing the staff do at this hotel is clean, clean, clean which was one of our top priorities.

The food at all sittings is excellent with a wide variety for everyones tastes.

There are two swimming pools, one the quiet pool which is great if you just want to relax or the larger pool which has entertainment throughout the day and is a bit more lively. There is the usual section of holiday makers who get up between 6am and 7am to put their towels down on the sunbeds, which frankly we could not be bothered to do - We were on holiday!! If we couldn't get a bed around the pool we tended to go to the beach where we found you could usually find beds and a better view. The beach tends to become quite windy, but that is where you will get your best tan! There are looky looky people on the beach selling their wares but if you don't want them they are friendly and will just go away. Good tip for the ladies, have your nails manicured and pedicured, the lady does a great job for half the price at home.

A good tip is to leave a little something for the maids and they will look after you well, leaving flowers on the bath or on the beds and arranging the towels into crowns or swans which is a nice touch. Bathrooms are kept really clean as is the whole hotel.

Guests are given three vouchers to eat at the specialist restaurants. The Italian came out tops for us, although some people preferred the Octupus or the Ocean Grill. Obviously it depends on your own personal tastes.

The trips are expensive but well worth the money. Our favourite was swimming with the Dolphins and if you can afford it don't miss it. Make sure you book this on your welcome as this is booked well in advance. Also the Monster Truck trip is a must which takes you into the little towns. A good tip is to take pens and paper and clothes, but not sweets or money as the children will not go to school if given these.

Overall the entertainment was reasonable and the Fun Team worked very hard to keep people happy.

Clean beach towels can be obtained every day from the kiosk. Do not loose them as it will cost you 20 dollars!

One tip for making money go further is to change your money at the local shopping centre banks, because if you use American dollars in the shops they give you pesos in return using a lower rate of exchange.

We would recommend the Gran Ventana to anyone wanting to visit the Dominican Republic.

I stayed at the Gran Ventana from 08-17- 08-21. beautiful hotel, friendly warm staff who always greet you with "hola" didnt go to the restaruants, the buffet was good enough for me. and for vegeterians like myself, I was surprised of the many veggie dishes they had. 2 thumbs up, I'm in the process of making plans for next years visit, and I will stay at the Gran Ventana, every year I come to the DR.
