We spent Labor Day weekend at Gran Bahia Hotel in Samana. The area it is located in is beautiful and the hotel itself is attractive, but I would not recommend it. Check in is at three pm and we arrived around 3:30. The rooms were not ready until after 5:30pm. The restaurant conveniently closes at 3pm so that new guests cannot get a bite to eat until supper at 7pm. We tried to make a reservation to eat at the Italian restaurant, but were told that reservations are only taken on the same day between 8 am and noon, which of course was impossible since check in is not until 3! They did have a pool table that the kids played with, but it was warped and unlevel. The food at supper tasted fine, but service was poor. We were nearly done eating when the waiters brought the drinks and the glasses were very small. During the day it was hard for my children to get a soft drink because the drink places were closed and the little store was often closed. I don't think they were really too interested in doing business. They offer a free boat ride to Cayo Levantado. What they don't tell you is that you have to walk a fairly difficult path that is a little bit hard to find because there are no signs. The trail is long and involves rocky inclines and steep stairs. It would be impossible for some people to make it. The boat departs at 9:30 and Cayo Levantado is gorgeous. I could have stayed there all day. The only prblem was that the hotel checkout is at noon so we had to take the boat back at 11:20 to get checked out. Conveniently lunch is from 1-3 so you cannot eat before you leave. The worst part however, was the hard, hard beds. I don't know how they can in good conscience use beds like that in their hotel. I was sore in the morning. I took a shower, but could not wash my hair because there was no hot water and the water was really cold. I am so glad that I didn't invite guests from the states to go with me. I loved the area and the island Cayo Levantado and would like to go back, however I will stay somewhere else. I forgot to mention that the swimming pool closes at 6:30pm which was not convenient for us and the beach at the hotel is really pretty, but they pick up the lounge chairs early in the evening around 6pm.
