Hubby, myself and 5 kids just returned from the Merengue and really had a fantastic time!! Our kids ages 12 - 21 were never bored, lots of activities provided by entertainment staff for all ie: bocce ball, volleyball, water polo, soccer, and more. Poolside Muerengue dance lessons and water aerobics provided by an all enthusiastic entertainment staff were so much fun! Spanish lessons were provided by "Franchesca" every AM for those interested, and evening "ENTERTAINMENT AT MERENGUE was EXCELLENTE, EXCELLENTE"! My kids developed friendships with kids from Germany and Canada, and gained a real positive multi-cultural experience. I can't give enough praise for the food, service, and welcoming staff there. Every night at dinner the wait staff greeted us with music and singing, and each meal had the most exotic fresh fruit and juices. Weather was OK, but due to high seas every day, all snorkling and ocean pleasure activities were cancelled. Newly opened "Ocean World" is beautiful -- we swam and played with the Dolphins and caught a cute sea lion show. The New Years Eve party was a spare-no-expense extravaganza, and I could really go on and on about much more. Overall, just beautiful accommodations, very relaxing and enjoyable. Would highly reccommend!

My husband and I stayed at Riu Merengue
Feb. 2004. I was violently ill on the third day of a two week stay. Hard to believe almost 2 years later people are still getting sick.
The fist day of my illness was the worst. I was ill for three straight days. I was vomiting and had diarrhaea. I did not feel like myself until 6 days later. If were to fly out of the DR on the first day I could not have done it. I couldn't walk 10 feet without needing a bathroom. As another person said I wouldn't go back if you paid my flight and accommodation! Several people we spoke to at the resort were ill too, but not as severely as I was. I felt bad for my husband who couldn't leave the room (except to eat) and took care of me for three straight days. It is too bad because the beach area was beautiful - lots of shade and chairs and the resort in itself was nice. The food was disappointing. I would not recommend staying at any of the Riu hotels.
