The best words to describe it are quaint and homey. I stayed at the Coco Hotel and at the Coconut Palms Resort. Two very different atmospheres. If you like to experience the country you visit and not be isolated from it, the Coco Hotel is the BEST! It's clean, efficiently run, good food in the restaurant (good based on DR standards, don't expect too many spices in this country), and good conversation at the bar. It's a non-busy street ride or walk to old town Sosua and the Sosua Beach. Or, there is a great little beach just a few blocks away, shared with only one other hotel.

Not for those who want the all-inclusive hotel with organized water arobics. If you've ever worn a backpack or just appreciate the differences each culture brings to the world, this is your place. They have backpacker specials for around $15US or nicer rooms for $20US. European run so it's not run down, just real. I had a few special needs and they were very happy to accomodate! Charlie, a handyman, is your best translator if you're not fluent in Spanish, French, or Swedish. Although all but the owner's wife were pretty fluent in English. They can also arrange tours but we did our own adventuring. The Northcoast Diver shop was a very professional dive shop near downtown, reasonable dive prices as well. I can't wait to go back.

We stay in Cocohotel for 3 weeks and did have a great time. Everyday they clean the room and get clean towels, the service is good and if something not working good they fix it for you asap. We go back in sept 2002 for 4 weeks. If you are from holland, take a pot of "pindakaas van Calve" with you, for Ritchie and for his wife "Nutella chocolatebutter"
Can't wait to be there
