It was our second visit to the Merengue in as many years.
The rooms are spacious with aircon and mini bar. Very comfortable beds - it was hard to get up! Although that was probably the drink talking... as it\\\'s all inclusive.

We landed on 21st September 2003 - that evening... there was a 6.5 earthquake!
Scared the living daylights out of all of us. Minor damage to the hotel.. superficial cracks etc.

I went outside and checked the room for cracks witha torch. Then back to bed ! It was a long flight.
It was interesting to see people running past in the night clothes and less!!

Throughout our 2 week stay we had minor aftershocks - for example.. the sunbed would sway a little... after a few rum and cokes you didn\\\'t notice!

On our first visit we went diving at Sosua - Superb...
This time we went on the Monster Truck Safari - highly recommended. It gives you a very good insight to DR life styles. Take plenty of pens and pencils with you for the children at the schools. Don\\\'t give sweets or money as the trucks go past several times a day and they have dental problems already! And take a towel and swimwear - they stop at a very scenic river for a swim.

The hotel is right on the beach, I mean, like 50 feet away! Superb clean beach with small waves. Ideal for messing around in. The pool was good, not too crowded.

There is daily entertainment in the pool and beach area and a show every night - one night a week is a Carribean Street party - a must see.

All in all a superb holiday, and, as Arnie says... \\\"I\\\'ll be back!\\\"

My husband and I stayed at Riu Merengue
Feb. 2004. I was violently ill on the third day of a two week stay. Hard to believe almost 2 years later people are still getting sick.
The fist day of my illness was the worst. I was vomiting and had diarrhea. I was ill for three straight days. I did not feel like myself until 6 days later. If were to fly out of the DR on the first day I could not have done it. I couldn't walk 10 feet without needing a bathroom. As another person said I wouldn't go back if you paid my flight and accommodation! Several people we spoke to at the resort were ill too, but not as severely as I was. I felt bad for my husband who couldn't leave the room (except to eat) and took care of me for three straight days. It is too bad because the beach area was beautiful - lots of shade and chairs and the resort in itself was nice. The food was disappointing. I would not recommend staying at any of the Riu hotels.
