Hi. I just returned from a 7 day stay at the Riu Bachata Hotel at Bahia Maimon. It is located about 15 minutes west of Puerto Plata and about 30 minutes west of the airport. What stands out most is the very scenic beach. The backdrop includes mountains and a Fiji Islands type of verdant rock/butte formation. The sand is not as white and the water is not as crystalline as other areas in the DR, but it is still very nice.
One side of the resort has the beach which is shared by the 3 Riu resorts and you can use the facilities of any of them. The other side has the bay which is very tranquil and has the water sports.
The food, service, pools, landscape, rooms, and drinks were all excellent.
I would definitely return.

We stayed there about 2 years ago - 1st day - Got there flet great couldn't wit to explore. 2nd Day - felt a bit queasy, but thought it was jet lag. 3rd Day - Felt incredibly sick. By the end of our 14 days I could hardly stand, vomiting, the runs, shaking violently. My husband was very ill, we befreinded a Canadian couple who both became very ill as well. People were vomiting in the dining room! thats how bad it got! Had to have numerous injections before I could travel. This wasn't an isolated incident, everyone was becoming ill.

We just got back from DR (Sept 2, 2007) stayed at Riu Bachata in puerto plata and all i can say that it was an awsome time. The food was good. The beach was ok, remeber to bring your water shoes as the beach is a little rocky. The staff at the hotel were great. There were 5 of us and 1 being my 2 1/2 yr old daugther and we ate everything and didnt get sick thank god. No one else that was there that we knew had any sickness of any kind. People have to remember that this is a 3rd world place so if you dont have a strong stomach or are a picky person as far as food is concerned then there are chances that some types of food may not suit your stomach. Oh ya remember to dink Mamajuana.. i love that drink. I brought back a bottle with the wood and leaves cant wait to make my own batch. The resort is very clean, our room was very clean as well. Remember to bring some type of hand sanitizer and wash your hands often and you will be fine. The have always have a worker standing outside the buffet resurant with a bottle of hand sanitizer and you are asked to use it before you go in, but i noticed alot of people refuse it and keep walking, those are the people causing sickness. The resort is using all the precautions but some of the tourists are just ignorant. I would recommend the resort to anyone. If you are looking for a nice white sand beach then this is not the place. Punta Cana has nicer beaches (white sand).

A friend and I, both early 40's just returned from a nice stay at the Bachata. The grounds are kept very clean by hard working staff. The beach was cleaned of seaweed and debris everyday and is lovely considering it's the North Coast. I enjoyed the walk from the Bachata past the Merenque to the Mambo each day. The beach at Bachata is the worst of the three but the entire beach has many personalities to enjoy. Tons of space for everyone could never be considered crowded, there's no way.
Food at Bachata is very good.
Rooms were unimpressive for 5 star*
Small, tiny balcony full of ants and bars that inhibit the view of Maimon Bay, very disapointing it was.
Pools very clean as are the outdoor bars. Staff was excellent especially the animation and front desk teams, very helpful.
The small quiet beach is the best for relaxation and is densely populated with coconut and palm trees.
A good choice hotel for families, couples and groups but certainly not singles.
Got very ill from the air conditioning unit and needed antibiotics.
Some rumored that the ducts were not clean and spread spores and virus through the units. A few others I spoke to complained of the same especially in the 500 and 600 blocks.
Entire resort appeared very very clean.
I won't return but it was a decent choice for thsi time.

i've just read all the comment mad on the riu hotels. and yes it seems many people have gotten sick but everyone get sick at every resort. it sounds stupid but it seems that those who were sick are making the riu resorts seem awful meanwhile they are amazing. im sure if you didn't get ill you would have had a totally different opion on it. being as you ddi stay in the hotel for most of your trip.

My husband and I stayed at Riu Merengue
Feb. 2004. I was violently ill on the third day of a two week stay. Hard to believe almost 2 years later people are still getting sick.
The fist day of my illness was the worst. I was ill for three straight days. I did not feel like myself until 6 days later. If were to fly out of the DR on the first day I could not have done it. I couldn't walk 10 feet without needing a bathroom. As another person said I wouldn't go back if you paid my flight and accommodation! Several people we spoke to at the resort were ill too, but not as severely as I was. I felt bad for my husband who couldn't leave the room and took care of me for three straight days. It is too bad because the beach area was beautiful - lots of shade and chairs and the resort in itself was nice. The food was disappointing. I would not recommend staying at any of the Riu hotels.

In response to GMANN's comment, I to just returned from DR, Riu Bachata on Jan. 24th. We had a horrible time! We incounted the illness as well. My husband became very sick, violent throwing up and dirahhea from 8pm to 8am. To make it worse, I called repeatedly to the front desk to get a doctor and I was refused help for four hours untill someone posing as a doctor (as I later found out) told me my husband would be fine and to call back in the morning. Finally at 7:30am I called and the doctor finally came. He had to be given IV's for the whole day because he was so dehydrated.

The resort will not tell you the truth about this virus. I was told on the phone that it is not a contagious illness, but once I started screaming in the main lobby, then the general manager told me that this is a very contagious illness that has been at the resort since December. They don't know what the illness is but when I was there over 3,000 people were sick.

I am in the process of contacting my travel agent concerning this as well as Riu and the department of health. I am looking for compensation, since we should have been warned about this. If anyone has any information that would help me I would appreciate hearing from you!

I wouldn't return to the Riu in DR if you paid me!

I just returned from the Bachata on Jan 11/05, 6 out of 8 people became very sick. We knew nothing of an illness going through the resort and were shocked to hear about it and wonder why we were not informed, we heard about travel vouchers being offered to pissed off customers , does anyone have any info on this? our trip was ruined because of this.
