What is a "yola?"
What is a "yola?"
Solution
A yola is a small hand made boat that is used to transport people. Yolas are usually made of either wood, but some yolas are made of other materials, like rubber. These small rafts are used to illegaly transport poorer Dominicans, and sometimes Haitians, from the Dominican Republic to Puerto Rico, via the Mona Passage. The Mona Passage is the body of water between the two countries. The trip is extremely costly and dangerous, because of the rough seas, but it does not stop people from trying to make it to Puerto Rico. A trip on a yola usually costs between RD$ 35,000 and RD$ 45,000. The U.S. Coast Guard is constantly on patrol in these waters.
