 Should I give the rental company my passport?
Solution Under no circumstance should you give anyone your passport. Regardless if it is a rental company, government official or friend. Keep your passport in your possession at all times. When renting with larger, reputable companies they will only ask for a photocopy of any documents, including passports. This is not a problem. But many times smaller rental companies ask for the physical passport so they can limit your travel in case their is an issue that needs to be resolved. At times rental companies may try to extort clients by threatening to withhold the document. If you are in this situation, please call your local embassy for help.
