Answer Self-defense and illegal possession of a firearm are two different things.

If you kill somebody in self-defense with an illegal firearm, a judge will determine whether the conditions for self defense are met (imminent danger, proportionality of the response, etc.) If they are, you're off the murder charge.

Of course, you may then have to face the illegal possession charge.
