|VIP visitors for Easter
Prime Minister Jean Chretien and family, and former US President Bill Clinton and family will be spending their Easter vacations in the Dominican Republic. Chretien joins hundreds of thousands of Canadians that have made the Dominican Republic their preferred Caribbean island. This is his first trip to the Dominican Republic.
Clinton, on the other hand, has become a repeat visitor after he first came to Punta Cana in January 2002 on his first holiday abroad after ending eight years as President of the United States. Since then, Clinton has probably been in and out five times.
News reports say that Chretien and Clinton will be staying in Casa de Campo in La Romana. They are also expected to visit and play golf in Punta Cana.
Clinton had already made a stopover in the Dominican Republic last week on a 33-country tour to promote efforts to fight HIV/ AIDS.
|Easter Week prevention program
The annual nationwide prevention program, coordinated by the Centro de Operaciones de Emergencias (COE), will begin this Monday, 14 April, and end on the evening of Sunday, 20 April. The plan is to minimize the number of accidents and fatalities during the prime vacation week for Dominicans, known as Semana Santa. Emphasis will be placed on reducing the number of drownings, extreme sun exposure and road accidents. The COE closes around 100 vacation spots nationwide that are not prepared to handle crowds, however none of these are sites that regularly receive foreign tourists. The week reaches its peak from Wednesday to Sunday. Those who can avoid traveling on the late afternoon/evenings of Thursday or Sunday should do so.
Volunteer corps of 3,353 volunteers and 58 ambulances will take to the roads, with the support of 23 national institutions, including the Red Cross, Civil Defense, the Ministry of Public Health, the National Police, the Armed Forces, and the Metropolitan Transport Authority, among others.

Puerto Plata has accepted the challenge to host DATE in April 2004.
