Mark Travel Corporation promotes DR
Hans Dannenberg, director of the Puerto Plata Hotel Association, says that the Mark Travel Corporation is extremely confident about the upsurge of business on the North Coast and announced its plans to reintroduce its presence there. Last year alone the company booked 2.6 million US travelers, sending them primarily to Mexico, Hawaii, Las Vegas and Europe, through its various vacation companies. These affiliates include Adventure Tours, ATA Vacations, AeroMexico Vacations, Blue Sky Tours, Funjet Vacations, MexSeaSun, MGM MIRAGE Vacations, Mountain Vacations, Showtime Tours, Southwest Airlines Vacations, TMTC International, Town and Country Tours, TransGlobal Vacations, Travel Charter, US Airways Vacations and United Vacations, among others. Claudio A. Zboznovits, marketing director for the company, told Hoy newspaper that from September to December of this year, the company will put 60,000 tourists on direct flights from Milwaukee to the Dominican Republic. In addition to Puerto Plata, Mark Travel tourists will also be heading for the beaches of the East Coast.

Zbznovits recently visited Puerto Plata, Playa Dorada, Maimón, Cofresí, Sosúa and Cabarete to inspect the hotels there. He expects 7,000 to 8,000 tourists to choose Puerto Plata as their vacation destination and their accommodations at 19 participating area hotels. http://www.marktravel.com/

Tourism up 24% so far this month
According to Central Bank statistics, tourism is up by 24% for the first two weeks of July, constituting a “boom” within the hospitality sector. The increase is even more significant when taking into account the upcoming Pan American Games and the additional attractions for tourists. During the first six months of the year, tourism from the United States, accounting for 32% of the total number, increased by 27%, Canadian tourists have increased by 20% and European tourism is up 16%. The average tourist spends an estimated US$114 dollars per day, with an average stay of 9 days, according to the Central Bank.
Dominicans in the Grammy Awards
Milly Quezada, Kinito Méndez, Los Hermanos Rosario, Ilegales and Monchy y Alexandra are among Hispanic performers nominated for Latin Grammy Awards.
  • Milly Quezada (Pienso Así...), Kinito Méndez (Sigo Siendo El Hombre Merengue) and Los Hermanos Rosario (Swing A Domicilio) are nominated in the Best Merengue Album category.
  • Monchy y Alexandra (Confesiones...) are down for the Best Contemporary Tropical Album.
  • Ilegales (Marca Registrada) are nominated in the Best Pop Album By A Duo Or Group With Vocal category.

Presented by the Latin Recording Academy, the Grammy is regarded as the recording industry’s most prestigious award.
Now in its fourth year, the awards ceremony will take the stage on 3 September 2003 at the American Airlines Arena in Miami.
The Latin Grammy Awards structure includes 41 categories, including four general areas: Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best New Artist. Latin Grammy fields include: Pop, Rap/Hip-Hop, Rock, Tropical, Regional Mexican, Traditional, Jazz, Brazilian, Children's, Classical, Production and Music Video.
The Latin Grammy Awards recognize artistic and/or technical achievement, not sales figures or chart positions, and the winners are determined by the votes of their peers, the qualified voting members of the Academy.
The Academy’s members are industry professionals with creative or technical credits on six commercially released tracks (or their equivalent), where the recording is in Spanish or Portuguese and commercially released in a Latin country or North America, or who have participated in similar fashion on a commercially released album, 51% of which is in Spanish or Portuguese.

Santo Domingo has eight parks
The capital city of the Dominican Republic has an expansive 30 kilometers of green space within its limits, or 5% of the 104 square kilometers that make up Santo Domingo. These parks are the Jardín Botánico Nacional, Mirador Sur, Litoral Sur, Eugenio Maria de Hostos, Independencia, Duarte, Enriquillo and Cayetano Germosén.
Other nearby parks, such as the Parque del Este (where the Pan Am Games venues were built), the Parque Mirador del Norte and the Parque Zoológico Nacional are part of the newly created Provinces of Santo Domingo Este and Santo Domingo Norte.
Travel agencies, friends & the Internet
According to an exit poll carried out by the Central Bank, more US tourists discovered the Dominican Republic through the Internet (2.7%) than by magazines (2.5%), newspapers (1.1%) or TV (1%). The main source of information on the country remains travel agencies (28.7%) and friends (27.8%).
European tourists rely on travel agencies in greater number than their American counterparts (60.1%), followed by friends (14.2%), magazines (4.3%), radio and TV (2.9%), the Internet (1.4%), and newspapers (1.2%).
