Best in track coming for IAAF meet
Felix Sanchez, the Dominican Republicís only Olympic gold medalist, is in Santo Domingo training for the Felix Sanchez Gran Prix that opens on 14 May. Also scheduled to compete in the Santo Domingo Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Stadium event is Kamani Bayano, the Panamanian hurdler who placed 5th in the Athens Olympic Games. Others competing in the 400 hurdles are Ken Ferguson from Canada and Otis Harris from the United States.
The Grand Prix is a sports meet organized under the International Association Athletics Federation rules.
The DR has two IAAF ranked athletes, Felix Sanchez, gold medal winner in the Athens Olympics, and Carlols Johelin Santos, ranked 12th in the 400 meters.
Also participating in the event will be the 4 x 400 meters menís relay, which recently qualified for the 10th IAAF World Championship in Helsinski, this summer.
The event will take place at the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Stadium track, remodeled for the Pan American Games in 2003.
Delta into Santiago
Delta began service to its second city in the Dominican Republic, Santiago de los Caballeros on Monday, 2 May. The airline joins Jet Blue and American Airlines in connecting New Yorkís John F. Kennedy Airport and the second-largest Dominican city. Flight 307 departs JFK at 6:20 am arriving to Santiago at 9:57 am. The return flight 314 departs Santiago at 11:20 am and arrives in NY at 2:55 pm. Delta also has daily service to Santo Domingo from JFK. Delta flies a Boeing 757 and the flight has a 3:37 time duration.
Grand Tourism Award for Ventura Serra
The chief executive officer of Occidental Hotels in the Dominican Republic, Ventura Serra won the Grand Tourism Award 2004 during the Annual Tourism Awards Ceremony held last Thursday at the Hotel Melia Santo Domingo. The annual event is organized by the Ministry of Tourism.
Ventura is first vice president of the National Hotel & Restaurant Association and president of the Playa Dorada Association. He is recognized for his organization of DATE 2004 that relaunched Puerto Plata as a destination based on its community and complementary attractions.
Others receiving awards were Luis Vidal (Tour Operator of the year), Andres Fernandez (travel agent of the year), Maria Viera (Customs inspector of the year), Juan Polanco (Migration inspector), Navy Captain Samuel Jimenez Lorenzo (tourism police); Carolina Medina (tour guide); Maria Jose Berbel Rodriguez (hotelier of the year); Ricardo and Eduardo Brea (restauranteurs of the year), Oscar Orbe (chef of the eyear), Hugo Martin Acosta (bartender of the year), Arelis Pena Brito (tourism reporter of the year), American Airlines (Cibao, Puerto Plata and Las Americas airports), Corsair (La Romana), USA 3000 (Punta Cana) received awards for most passengers transported.
Santo Domingo de Fiesta
The Ministry of Tourism and the city government of Santo Domingo is sponsoring music and art events at the Plaza de Espana and Columbus Park in the Colonial City. Thursday and Sunday performances are scheduled for the Plaza de Espana. On Fridays and Saturdays, art exhibitions presentations are scheduled for Columbus Park. Maestro Jorge Taveras, Miguel Leclerc and Victor Taveras are the musical coordinators. On the list of performers are Fernando Casado, Sonia Silvestre, Claudio Cohen, Milagros Hernandez (La Loba), Luchiy Vicioso, Frank Ceara, Rando Camasta, Claudine Bono, Omar Franco, Frank Valdez, Miriam Cruz, Francis Santana, Sonia Alfonso, Jose Antonio Rodriguez, Manuel Jimenez, Rhina Ramirez, Adalgisa Pantaleon among others.
