New Playa Dorada magazine
The association of hotels of Playa Dorada in Puerto Plata has announced the release of the third edition of their Playa Dorada magazine. The magazine carries features on the botanical gardens atop the Isabel de Torres Mountain, action-packed days in Cabarete, the hotels that opened in 2005 in Playa Dorada, artist Ramon Pena's work, Centro Leon in Santiago, as well as other cultural events in Puerto Plata. Dolores Vicioso, editorial director of dr1.com once again was entrusted with the magazine's content. New hotels in Punta Cana
Sol Melia's new Paradisus Palma Real is now accepting visitors of all ages in Punta Cana. This all-inclusive luxury hotel, built next door to the Melia Caribe Tropical, has 600 suites, including 102 suites, and two presidential suites, that have been set apart for even more luxury, with the personalized royal service program. On the premises is a 2,625 square meter spa. The hotel seeks to host meetings and offers 3,800 square meter hall in addition to other smaller halls. The banquet facilities can serve up to 1,000 persons for dinner. This is the second Paradisus hotel in the DR, the first is further north, the Paradisus Punta Cana.
Pinero Group bets on Samana
Counting on the slated November 2006 opening of the El Catey, Samana airport, the Grupo Pinero that operates the Bahia Principe brand in the Dominican Republic has announced it is making a US$60 million investment to purchase and remodel four hotels in Samana, with 900 rooms. The Spanish chain already operates the Bahia Principe in Rio San Juan, and a large resort complex in Punta Cana. The Spanish hotel group announced that it is building a 191-luxury hotel in Cayo Levantado, after having secured rights to the island for 50 years with the Dominican government. The Gran Bahia Principe Cayacoa, on top the hill overlooking Samana, will offer 223 newly renovated rooms. The Gran Bahia Principe Samana, formerly the Gran Bahia, will offer 103 rooms. The latest adquisition of the group, is the Gran Bahia Principe El Portillo in Las Terrenas.
Baseball fans vacation in DR
The USA Today this week highlights how an increasing number of US baseball fans are traveling to the DR to follow the players as they go to bat for their local teams. Santo Domingo and Santiago, not known for beaches, are two favorite sites for baseball outings.
