|Another Small Luxury Hotel
Minister Felix Jimenez head celebrations to formally inaugurate the boutique hotel, Sivory Punta Cana in the northern end of La Altagracia province. Sivory joins Tortuga Bay in Punta Cana and Casa Colonial in Playa Dorada, Puerto Plata in its promise of privacy and personalized service. A 55-suite beachfront hotel, Sivory is the second Dominican hotel to operate under the prestigious Small Luxury Hotels of the World chain (SLH). Casa Colonial was the first SLH member. The hotel is a Spanish investment by the same group behind the Catalonia Beach Resort. Company chief executive, Manuel Vallet was also present for the inauguration. The hotel is decorated in a minimalist tropical style.
|Movie stars seek DR vacation property
Recent news reports reveal that Brad Pitt, who was here to accompany Angelina Jolie when she was filming the movie "The Good Shepherd" with Robert De Niro was in the DR last week scouting for real estate development locations. DR1 forums had reported that Pitt was "extremely interested in Samana." He was accompanied by star promoter, George Nader, who some time ago was reported to be assisting Colombian star Shakira to find property in Samana. An AP release says that the actor took a helicopter to the Samana peninsula and flew over the east coast tourist area of Punta Cana as well as over Miches, another eastern area that is yet to be developed.
News reports from Cabarete indicate that Glenn Close, of "Fatal Attraction" fame is shopping for real estate in the north coast after having vacationed in Cabarete with her family last month.
Earlier this year, The New Yorker Magazine reported that fashion designer Donatella Versace was staying at a new resort just west of the Puerto Plata airport.
An El Caribe newspaper reported this week that Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins were seen vacationing in Samana.
|Magaly Toribio appointed deputy minister
Magaly Toribio, who has worked as marketing counsel to the Tourism Minister during his current term in office, and has been in charge of liaison with the BVK public relations and advertising agency in the US, was appointed deputy tourism minister last week. Decree 144-66 appoints her to replace Hans Dannenberg who has just taken up his new post as the Dominican Republic's first ambassador to India. Toribio will be responsible for Santo Domingo, Boca Chica and Juan Dolio, as well as for cruise ship matters. Toribio is the founder and owner of Target, a tourism and marketing public relations agency that also produces the De Viaje magazine and the Playa Dorada hotels magazine. She is a graduate in hotel administration from UNIBE and has a masters degree in marketing from INTEC, and graduate studies in Italy and Spain.
|Electronic Music Festival in Cabarete
The Caribbean Electronic Music Festival 2006 is scheduled for Cabarete Beach, April 14-16, the Easter holiday weekend. The event is organized by "After", an electronic music collective and production company based in Canada and the DR. The event will feature artists from Canada, the U.S., Spain and the Dominican Republic, over a 36-hour period, an undertaking which has yet to be attempted in the DR. The event starts on Friday, 14 April at midnight and will continue non-stop until the afternoon on Sunday, 16 April. General admission to the event will be free of charge with pre-registration, and tickets will be available through the www.cemf.com.do website as from today.
Some of the artists who have been confirmed for the inaugural event are: Los Hermanos from the Underground Resistance collective out of Detroit, notorious for the huge track "Nights of the Jaguar", and the duo Pig & Dan from Spain. Others are the After collective DJ's including Maus, a favorite in the Dominican Republic, as well as Scoy, who has had quite an impact on music lovers in the DR over the last year. Also scheduled to play are DJ's Soundshaper from Montreal and local Dominican favorites Aldo and Hansel. In addition, After is bringing to the festival Canadian VJ Cinetik, who will produce cutting-edge visuals for the event.

Gonzalo Gonzalez, managing director of BVK, announced the first phase of the new Ministry of Tourism website — http://www.godominicanrepublic.com
The website highlights tourism destinations within the Dominican Republic.
BVK is the US market advertising and public relations company for the Ministry of Tourism. Gonzalez announced the government invested US$50,000 in the first phase of a total US$250,000 envisioned for the site when completed. As reported in El Caribe, the site would be completed by the end of the year.
The website replaces www.dominicana.com.do
