|Columbus Lighthouse lit up
Dominicans have all but forgotten about the projected beams of the Columbus Lighthouse, but this Tuesday, 5 December the 170 bright searchlights will be back on. To commemorate the 514th anniversary of the discovery of the island of Santo Domingo by the Spaniards, the lit-up image of the giant cross will again be seen from all over the city of Santo Domingo as of 6:30pm. The lights have not been turned on in three years due to lack of adequate maintenance. Andy Mieses, governor of the Columbus Lighthouse, also announced that several of the internal museum rooms, with exhibits from the Americas and Spain, are being enhanced. The Columbus Lighthouse was inaugurated in 1992, on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of Columbus's arrival to the island. It houses the tomb of the explorer's remains.
The National Choir kicks off the Christmas spirit with a Tuesday 5 December concert at the Capilla de los Remedios in the Colonial City at 8pm. This coincides with the lighting up of the Columbus Lighthouse's giant cross at 6:30pm.
