Dominicans to Cooperstown
Former San Francisco Giants pitcher Juan Marichal expects to be accompanied by several countrymen in the Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame soon. He said that it "will rain Dominicans," as reported in Saturday's Listin Diario. Marichal has been the only Dominican in the hall since 1983, after a successful 16-year career in the Major Leagues during which he won 243 games. Marichal predicts that the next member will be Sammy Sosa, if the latter decides to stop playing in the Major Leagues. To qualify, players need to have been retired for at least five years. Otherwise, he says Sosa has the numbers - 588 home runs and 1,575 runs batted in. Other future Dominican candidates include Pedro Martinez, Vladimir Guerrero, David Ortiz, Albert Pujols, Manny Ramirez and Alex Rodriguez.
CTO scholarships
The Caribbean Tourism Organization is offering scholarships for Dominicans interested in studying tourism and hospitality. The scholarships are worth up to US$15,000 and are for citizens of Caribbean nations who want to study at post-graduate level (masters) and US$2,500 for students pursuing tourism/hospitality studies at the certificate, diploma, associate degree or undergraduate level. The funds are also available for industry personnel who want to gain proficiency in a second language to assist them in their job. Studies can be pursued both within and beyond the Caribbean region.
The deadline for applying for the scholarships and study grants offered by the CTO Foundation is 15 April 2007.
Application forms for the CTO Foundation's scholarship, as well as further information, can be found at www.onecaribbean.org
City hotels guide
The Association of Hotels of Santo Domingo has just released their new official tourism guide, "IN Santo Domingo." The guide will be available in city hotel rooms and has sections on places to visit, shopping, nightlife, restaurants, lodging, a calendar of events and maps.
Santo Domingo has more than 4,500 hotel rooms.
Long weekend coming up
The upcoming birthday of Dominican founding father, Juan Pablo Duarte means a long weekend in the DR. Because Duarte's birthday falls on a Friday this year, Dominicans get the following Monday off. Plan for a Friday 26, Saturday 27, Sunday 28, and Monday 29 January long weekend. Long weekends are the favorite time for Dominicans to travel to resorts and beaches around the country. This is the last long weekend until Easter. For more information on long weekends in the DR, see http://dr1.com/travel/prepare/holidays.shtml
