Santiago carnival big success
Yesterday's big carnival parade in the Dominican Republic's second city was a sight to behold. According to the governor's office, the new parade route, while confusing some, enabled a larger number of people to take part and allowed even more spectators to watch the parade. The entire area around the Monument was used for the carnival and prizes were awarded to the best groups, the best typical costume and the best of the devils ("lechones"), those elaborately costumed individuals who go around whacking people with inflated pig's bladders in order to drive the devil out during Lent. Carnival happens every Sunday in February with the main celebrations in Bonao, La Vega and Santiago, peaking with the National Carnival Parade along the Malecon of Santo Domingo as of 3 pm on Sunday, 4 March.
Whales delight crowds in Santo Domingo
For the first time in over two decades, a pair of humpback whales was spotted cavorting off the southern shores of the Dominican Republic, giving the public a free show and enthralling adults and children alike. Surfacing off the coast near the National Aquarium, the mother and the newborn whale played for hours as traffic got tied up along the waterfront and some high-profile figures stopped their motorcades to enjoy the spectacle. In February 1985 a pair of whales surfaced off the coast in front of the Agriculture Bank along George Washington Avenue at approximately the same time as these latest visitors, 11 in the morning. Whale-watching season takes place mid January through mid March, with boats departing from Samana ports for observation in northeastern waters.
