|Ritz Carlton Cap Cana
Ritz Carlton is the fourth international luxury brand to claim the eastern coastline of the DR, on the footsteps of the Westin Roco Ki, Trump Farallon Estates and Four Seasons Casa de Campo.
Global powerhouse The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company announced a two-fold partnership with Cap Cana on Monday, 17 September. The 220-room Ritz Carlton Cap Cana includes a 16,000 square-foot spa and five gourmet restaurants. The company will also be offering 194-privately owned beachfront and golf Residences at The Ritz-Carlton, Cap Cana. The Ritz-Carlton venues are scheduled to open in early 2010 and are part of a two-phase US$1 billion endeavor (real estate sales and construction).
J. W. Marriott Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of Marriott International expressed, "Cap Cana has envisioned an exciting, bold luxury tourism and real estate development project that promises to be one of the most exciting new destinations in the Caribbean. We are excited that our Ritz-Carlton brand will be represented at Cap Cana and are hopeful that one or more of our other hotel brands will also fit in with Cap Cana's plans for this world-class destination".
In the Caribbean region, Ritz Carlton operates hotels in Cancun, Cayman, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, St. Lucia, Turks & Caicos and the US Virgin Islands, as well as in the Bahamas.
|Juan Luis Guerra at Apple Store
Dominican contemporary singer/composer Juan Luis Guerra will perform at the New York Soho Apple Store on 2 October on the occasion of Hispanic Heritage Month. He was chosen together with Pepe Aguilar, Xtreme and Jeremias to perform at Apple stores in five US cities as part of the Latin heritage celebrations. The series begins on Sept. 15 with a performance by the B-Side Players at Apple's Chicago store on North Michigan Avenue, and wraps up on Oct. 13 with Down ("Lean Like a Cholo") at the company's Santa Monica, Calif., location.
Juan Luis Guerra is on tour promoting "La llave de mi corazon," his new Grammy-nominated CD, part of a crossover strategy by the outstanding Latin performer.
|DR becomes retiree paradise
With the approval and publication of Law 171-07 on Foreign Retirees, the Dominican Republic has become a paradise for people planning to retire to an idyllic setting. Fast-tracked residency paperwork (45 days), duty-free household goods, reductions on motor vehicle taxes, exemption on transfer taxes for the first purchase of real estate, 50% reduction on taxes on mortgages, 50% reduction on the annual property tax, exemption on taxes on dividends and interest, 50% reduction on capital gains are just some of the attractions. Developers are very happy with the new law. Just ask Jose Luis Asilis, the president of the Metro Group, who pointed out the need to publicize the news overseas. Asilis told a meeting organized by Listin Diario that Europeans can "live like kings on a fraction of what they receive in pensions."
The minimum monthly income required is US$1,500 US for retirees with a government or private pension and US$2,000 in verified income from all others.

|POP gets ready to merengue
The long-awaited Merengue Festival hits Puerto Plata this coming 28, 29 and 30 September. This series of free merengue concerts will bring the biggest and best exponents of the most famous Dominican musical genre to the "Pearl of the Atlantic" for three days of fun. As usual for this type of event, the performers' names will flow gradually from the publicist's office in order to build expectations and generate enthusiasm.
