|JetBlue adds Puerto Plata
Low-fare carrier JetBlue has announced that it is adding a new service to Puerto Plata on the north coast of the Dominican Republic as of 10 January 2008. JetBlue serves 11 Caribbean destinations and is marketing itself as the low-fare, low-cost airline with the most flights to the Caribbean. The flight will come just in time to fly snowbirds down from the US northeastern region.
Customers flying JetBlue to/from Puerto Plata will travel on the airline's modern Airbus A320 fleet, which features all-leather seating and the most legroom in coach (based on average fleet-wide seat pitch for US airlines). The airline is also highlighting the fact that passengers will be able to view complimentary first-run movies and bonus features from FOX InFlight(tm) on JetBlue's signature seatback televisions.
Through its largest focus city at New York's JFK Airport, JetBlue also offers Caribbean travelers convenient connecting services to destinations across the airline's coast-to-coast route network.
JetBlue's new service between New York and Puerto Plata's Gregorio Luperon International Airport, is promoting fares starting at $109 each way, plus taxes and charges. The flight departs JFK International at 10:30am and arrives in POP International at 3:20pm as of 10 January 2008. The flight is scheduled to depart POP at 4:15pm and arrive at JFK at 7:05pm. The airline advises that the best fares are found on midweek travel dates, which must be purchased at the time of reservation, and there is a US$45 cancellation or change charge that can be made by calling 1-800-JETBLUE (1 809 200-9898 if located in the DR) or US$35 at jetblue.com, with applicable fare adjustment. Cancellations are for JetBlue travel credit only, valid for a year.
|Higuey's 500th anniversary
The municipality of Higuey will be celebrating its 500th anniversary soon. A commemorative date of 7 December 2007 has been set, and the plan is to hold year-long celebrations into 2008. The Archbishop's Office in Higuey is taking part in the coordination of the event, with the support of regional historians and business representatives.
|Caribbean Travel & Life
Caribbean Travel & Life magazine dedicates the first headline of its November issue to point out value for money opportunities at Dominican beaches. Another front-page headline on Hot Places to Go Right Now features Sun Village Resort & Spa (Puerto Plata), Agua Resort & Spa (Punta Cana) as new places to go for pampering in the Caribbean. The DR Ministry of Tourism is co-sponsoring a 14-page advertorial feature on the country. In its Travel Smart section, the focus is on Cabarete as an affordable and hip beach town. The hotels mentioned include Villa Taina, Velero Beach Resort and Viva Wyndham Tangerine.
