DR National Geographic map
The Global Foundation for Democracy and Development and its Washington-based branch, working closely with the Dominican Military Institute of Cartography, contracted the National Geographic Society (NGS) to produce an adventure map for visitors to the Dominican Republic. The detailed map seeks to promote the diversification of the local tourist offering while creating a cartographic base for the country. The map is available in English wherever National Geographic products are sold, as well as through the NGS's online store. A Spanish version of the map will soon be available.
The NGS will also be launching a travel guidebook on the DR in the near future.
Carnival comes to Punta Cana
Punta Cana's first ever carnival parade will take place on the second Saturday in March. This year it will honor fashion designer Oscar de la Renta. Grupo Puntacana is organizing the event in coordination with the Union Carnavalesca Vegana, which runs the famous La Vega carnival that takes place every Sunday in February in the central valley city.
The Punta Cana carnival will set off on 3pm on Saturday, 8 March from the entrance of Puntacana Village up on to the 1st of November Boulevard. The parade will end with a merengue concert back at the Village at 9:30pm. Paul Beswick, in charge of community relations for the Puntacana Group, said that the idea was to showcase Dominican cultural and folkloric traditions for visiting tourists.
Performing in ITB Berlin
Leading Dominican stars are expected to take part in a mega production on the history of Dominican music sponsored by the Banco Popular for the opening evening of the ITB Berlin fair. This year the Dominican Republic is the Official Partner Country at the fair. The event will be produced by Chiqui Hadad, Manuel Tejada is the musical director, and choreography has been entrusted to Fidel Lopez. Juan Luis Guerra, Milly Quezada, Maridalia Hernandez, El Prodigio, Adalgisa Pantaleon, Rubby Perez and Luis Payan are expected to perform. Cap Cana chef is sponsoring the menu for invited guests, with Dominican specialties such as arepitas de yuca, sancocho, ceviche, moro de guandules, pescado con coco, pudin de pan, dulces criollos, majarete, and arroz con leche. The Ministry of Tourism has sponsored a 300-meter Dominican pavilion, in addition to space taken by several other leading tourism companies operating in the DR, according to Giselle Diaz, coordinator of the Ministry of Tourism's offices abroad.
Marina d'Or vacation city
Marina d'Or has announced the construction of a Marina d'Or Ciudad de Vacaciones in Punta Cana. The announcement came on the occasion of a visit to the new development site by 52 beauty contestants who are vying for the Miss Spain title. The promoters say the project includes a luxury hotel, spa and real estate development. It is located on 724,000 square meters of Punta Cana shoreline, including a 500m stretch of beach. The company has also developed the Oropesa del Mar in Castellon, Spain, and a spa in Ribaritza in Bulgaria.
