Blue Flag for Costa Dorada
An international jury accepted recommendations made by the Dominican Institute of Environmental Law (IDARD) and granted the Hotel Grand Oasis Marien, Costa Dorada, Puerto Plata the prestigious Blue Flag certificate. The Grand Oasis chain is an affiliate of Globalia, the Air Europa company. This distinction is an international symbol of excellence in safety, amenities, cleanliness and environmental management.
Recent studies show that the Blue Flag makes economic sense and can potentially earn an income of millions every year for the beach and its environment. But maintaining Blue Flag status, however, does not come cheap and involves strict adherence to environmental criteria, including sending a sample of the seawater for laboratory testing every week.
Blue Flag beaches in the DR are: Cabeza de Toro Dreams Palm Beach, Cabeza de Toro Grand Oasis, Cabeza de Toro Natura Park in the Higuey municipality on the East Coast. Also Costa Dorada Grand Oasis, Costa Dorada Iberostar, Playa Dorada I and Playa Dorada II in Puerto Plata, on the North Coast.
Theater Festivals for 2009
From March to June, the DR will showcase three drama festivals at Santo Domingo and Santiago theaters. These are the VI International Festival of Theater (FITE) from 17-24 June, bringing excellent works from around the world to local audiences. Two festivals with local productions will precede the international event. These are the Festival Emilio Aparicio (1-15 March) at the Teatro Monina Sola of the Centro Cultural Narciso Gonzalez with the participation of emerging theatrical groups. And the Festival National de Teatro that will take place 16-31 March at the Palace of the Arts in Santo Domingoand the Gran Teatro del Cibao in Santiago. The events are coordinated by the Ministry of Culture.
MOC 2009 ready to rip
Now in its seventh year, Master of the Ocean 2009 is set and ready to "rip". Organizers of the international wind, kite and surf competition announced that this year's Master of the Ocean would be held from 24 February to 1 March in Cabarete, the DR's water-sports capital. Eighty competitors from around the world will be taking part in the competition. These include former Dominican champions Michael Guzman, James Otis, Luciano Gonzalez, Yan Marco Rivera and Manuel Rondon. The event will also feature 20 DJs who will keep the rhythm moving with the "IndepenDance Ocean Sound Festival." Competitors will take a shot at three disciplines - wind, kite and surfing - with the first prize going to the competitor who accumulates the highest points total in each category.
Miss Spain 2009
The contest to choose Miss Spain will be held in the DR, Miss Spain 2008, according to Andres Cid, director of the pageant. The Ministry of Tourism and Grupo Globalia (Grand Oasis hotels & Air Europa) are sponsoring the event that will take place at the National Theater in May. 52 beauty candidates representing the 52 provinces in Spain will travel to the DR in their quest to become the successor of Patricia Rodriguez, Miss Spain 2008. The announcement was originally made at the Fitur trade show in Madrid. Cid said that deals for the Spanish and Dominican TV rights are being worked out. Last year, the Spanish beauty queens traveled to Santo Domingo and Boca Chica for photo shoots.
