Cap Cana PGA Tour
The Cap Cana Championship, part of the PGA Senior Tour, is being held 23-29 March at the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course at Punta Espada Golf Club in the residential development of Cap Cana.
Tournament director Efren Garcia-Estrada says that this year's players again include many golfing legends. In addition to course designer Jack Nicklaus, who is here for the tournament, others include Australian Greg Norman who himself has designed a golf course for the country. Norman is the winner of 91 golf titles worldwide, including 20 PGA Tour titles. He was admitted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2001.
Others include fellow World Golf Hall of Fame members Hale Irwin, Bernhard Langer, Larry Nelson, Nick Price, Gary Player and Curtis Strange. Returning this year is defending champion Mark Wiebe, who cruised to a four-stroke, wire-to-wire victory over Vicente Fernandez at last year's Cap Cana Championship, the first-ever Tour-sanctioned event held in the Dominican Republic.
The 54-hole, stroke-play Cap Cana Championship will feature a 78-player field and official prize money of US$2.1 million, with the winner collecting US$315,000. Golf Channel will broadcast all three rounds in the United States and coverage of the event will be distributed internationally.
Punta Espada Golf Club, the first of three Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Courses to open in Cap Cana, is operated by Troon Golf and opened for play in November 2006. The par-72 course incorporates the surrounding natural beauty of Cap Cana, stretching along a coastline where on each hole golfers look out into the blue expanse of the Caribbean Sea.
The Cap Cana Championship is part of the Champions Tour's "The Road to the Charles Schwab Cup", a season-long points race that kicks off in Hawaii with 25 official events and culminates in Northern California at Sonoma Golf Club 26 October - 1 November 1, with US$2.1 million in payouts awarded to the season's top five leading performers.
Prague, Stockholm & Moscow offices
In an interview with Listin Diario, Petra Cruz, director of the Dominican tourist office in the German city of Frankfurt, says that the Ministry of Tourism will be opening three new tourist offices this year. She was interviewed while attending the ITB tourism fair. One office will open in Prague to oversee the Eastern European markets and another will open in Stockholm, covering the Scandinavian market. A third will open in Moscow, to expand the current representation and oversee the Russian Federation markets. The DR already has tourist offices in London, Paris, Madrid, Milan and Brussels. Cruz says the DR is the leading destination for European tourists in the Caribbean. "Growth will come from emerging markets and in the consolidated markets we have to develop market niches and high purchasing power segments such as golf, meetings, weddings and adventure sports. Cruz said that the European market makes up 40% of travel to the DR. She says that it is also an all-year-round tourism, without the peaks that come with other markets. She added that Europeans traveled in winter and in summer, and that the average stay was longer.
New ferry terminal
President Leonel Fernandez met with Puerto Rican investors in the US$10 million Ferries del Caribe terminal at the Port of Santo Domingo. The ferry has been taking tourists and cargo to and from Mayaguez, Puerto Rico for the past 12 years. The investors were accompanied by Secretary of State for Puerto Rico Kenneth McClintock. The new terminal will occupy an area of 29,000 square meters with a capacity for berthing boats of up to 600 feet. It is expected that the new project will generate US$60 million in revenues for the DR. Ferries del Caribe moves around 1,000 containers and 50,000 passengers a year.
Casa de Campo editor makes swimming top 10
The editor of Casa de Campo News in La Romana has retained his Top 10 World Ranking for Masters Swimming. Danilo Vicioso made the top 10 in the 45- to-49 age group, according to the FINA (the International Swimming Federation) that governs world amateur swimming. Despite having an off year, Vicioso still managed to get into the rankings with a 6th in the 200-meter backstroke; 7th in the 200-meter butterfly and 10th in the 200-meter individual medley (all four strokes). He still is the only Dominican on the list.
He says he is training for the two main challenges ahead this year: the PanAm Masters in Veracruz, Mexico and the South American Championships in Mar del Plata, Argentina.
