Four small theaters in Colonial City
There are four small theater houses with ongoing programs in Santo Domingo's Colonial City. Listin Diario reports that together they have become a kind of circuit for drama and comedy lovers. The first opened in 1974 at Casa de Teatro at Arz. Merino 110. This 200-person hall was followed by smaller theaters for less than 100 persons when the Teatro de Arte de Santo Domingo opened the La Cuarta, Espacio Teatral at the fourth floor of a building at El Conde and Calle Sanchez. The next is Las Mascaras, where Lidia Ariza and Germana Quintana hold weekly performances. Teatro Guloya moved to the Colonial City and is now located at Arq. Portes 120.
Paso Fino champions visit
Some of the best paso fino horses in the Americas will travel to Santiago for the First Las Americas Classic of Paso Fino horses. Paso fino horses are known for the smoothest ride of all. Competitors are coming from seven countries.
The president of the National Equestrian Association (Asena), Arnulfo Gutierrez and Mario Heinsen, president of the Dominican Paso Fino Association (Adopaso) announced the event that will take place from 3 to 5 July at the Gran Arena del Cibao in Santiago.
Horses will come from Aruba, Curacao, Venezuela, Panama, Colombia, Puerto Rico, US and DR.
Coming for the event is Joyero, the world champion. He will compete against Carnaval de Retorno, the Dominican champion. Others coming are Aurora de HH, Humildad del Abuelo, Magistrado de Vitrina, 30-30, Sucesos de NJ, Gaudi and La Mascara.
The competition will be followed by breeding these world famous horses with local mares, as reported in Hoy.
Chile and DR aviation deal
President Leonel Fernandez has sent to the Senate an aviation agreement with Chile that grants reciprocal rights to the sixth-freedom rights to fly passengers between Chile and the DR and the seventh-freedom rights for cargo flights.
Once passed by the Senate, the agreement will enable both Chile and the DR to carry passengers from a second country to a third by stopping in one's own country (sixth-freedom right). As part of seventh-freedom right, carriers from both countries may carry cargo between two foreign countries without continuing service to one's own country.
The agreement was signed on 3 April and will go into effect 60 days after both countries ratify the agreement.
USA Today promotes DR as good value
In an article on ten new routes that make international travel easier this summer for American travelers, USA Today journalist Jessica Labrencis places travel to the DR first on her list. In the article that appeared on 25 June, the newspaper focuses on new routes by major airlines and low-cost-carriers to dozens of destinations. On the DR, she says that cheap flights won't be hard to find this summer. For one, she mentions the Ft Lauderdale to Punta Cana flight by Spirit that will be available through 8 September, and the new Spirit regular service from Santiago to Fort Lauderdale that began 20 June. She also mentions that the DR is included in Spirit's weekly offers. "If you want to nab even cheaper fares, consider signing up for spirit's $9 Fare Club, which could help you find fares as low as US$1 each way (not including taxes and fees, of course)".
Also mentioned are the JetBlue flights to Santo Domingo, such as the new Ft. Lauderdale departures that began 18 June and the Boston departures that began 19 June.
And Delta is also mentioned for its slew of seasonal DR routes starting this fall. These are flights to Punta Cana from Detroit that will operate on weekends beginning 21 November, while Cincinnati and Minneapolis flights operate on Saturdays starting 19 December. Flights from NYC (JFK) to Puerto Plata are also due to begin 19 December and operate on Saturdays through 10 April.
