Columbus Park gets world recognition
The Cathedral-fronting Columbus Park has been included in the Project for Public Spaces (PPS) listing on the best squares in the world since March.
Omar Rancier, dean of the School of Architecture at UNPHU University and president for the DR of the International Council for Monuments and Sites (Icomos) secured the DR's inclusion among some other 600+ outstanding public places. He describes the park as an "urban living room" and "magic space," making the point that it is surrounded by outstanding works representing several periods - colonial, neoclassic and eclectic (neo-baroque and neocolonial).
Buildings around the square also include one by Puerto Rico's famous architect, Antonin Nechodoma, and Guillermo Gonzalez, who is regarded as the father of Dominican architecture.

TACA flight to Peru
Taca Airlines has begun its direct non-stop flight from Santo Domingo's Las Americas International Airport to Lima, Peru, with hard-to-beat fares of around US$319 round trip. The airline is also competing with region leader Copa by offering rates of US$359 to Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Panama and Mexico.
Booking for CHTA Marketplace
The Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association (CHTA), together with the Puerto Rico Convention Bureau, Puerto Rico Hotel and Tourism Association, Puerto Rico Tourism Company and Virgin Holidays, are inviting registrations to Caribbean Marketplace 2010.
Taking place at the Puerto Rico Convention Center in San Juan from 10-12 January 2010, next year's Caribbean Marketplace has been deemed absolutely critical due to its timing at the cusp of what many experts are speculating will be the beginning of the tourism industry's recovery.
Caribbean Marketplace is the requisite business-to-business marketing event for the Caribbean hotel and tourism industry to meet, network, negotiate and conduct business with buyers from around the world.
Caribbean Marketplace 2010 is expected to be even larger than the 2009 event, which saw the number of booths top the 400 mark for the first time in a decade. 12,292 appointments were scheduled in 2009, second only to the record set in 2008.
"Attending Caribbean Marketplace 2010 is hands down the most important thing you can do for your tourism product as we enter the new decade," said Enrique De Marchena Kaluche, President of CHTA, and a former president of the Dominican Republic leading hotel association.
"It is widely known that the greatest fortunes are made by those who not only survive a slump, but are well positioned at the start of a major economic recovery. This makes Caribbean Marketplace 2010 critical for all members of the region's hospitality sector, including tour operators who are likely to walk away from Caribbean Marketplace with some very lucrative contracts," De Marchena Kaluche noted.
For more information or to register for Caribbean Marketplace 2010, call CHTA at 305-443-3040, e-mail: [email protected] or visit http://www.caribbeanhotelandtourism.com/Marketplace.php.
Aquaglide new at Ocean World
Ocean World Adventure Park in Puerto Plata has added the giant Aquaglide play station to its offers for the summer vacation period. Aquaglide combines 3 distinct play areas, featuring climbing, sliding, bouncing and monkey bar activities and jumps into the water.
The access to the Aquaglide is now included with the admission or any other program. The giant slide is located on the beach, by the dolphin lagoon.
The park is active in promoting environmental conservation and educating children about the wonders of the ocean through their shows and interactive activities.
Included in the package is a video presentation on ocean diversity and participatory activities with the species that inhabit the marine world, like dolphins, sea lions, sharks, stingrays, and tropical birds.
The Ocean World experience puts an emphasis on what children can do to make a difference.
