White Sox Night in Chicago
Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia was in Chicago last week for the Dominican Republic Day with the Chicago White Sox at US Cellular Field. The event was sponsored and hosted by Apple Vacations, the leading US tour operator.
The first 20,000 fans were presented with a commemorative poster featuring past and present White Sox players who hail from the DR. An estimated 35,000 filled the stadium. The game was won that evening by the home team, the White Sox.
Patricia Perez, director of the Chicago Tourism Promotion Office, was also on hand to receive the over 70 travel agents from the Mid West that met at the principal suite of the stadium to discuss travel to the DR with the Tourism Minister, 8 hotel partners from the DR and the top brass of Apple Vacations, including executive VP Jeff Mullen and senior VP Tim Mullen and company founder and CEO John Mullen.
One of the highlights of the night was when Javier Garcia threw out the first pitch and took a photo with pitcher John Danks.
Apple Vacations executives and officials from the Dominican Republic Office of Tourism took an on-field photo with Dominican White Sox pitcher Octavio Dotel. There was also an on-field performance by Dominican Republic Folkloric Ballet.
Miss Ambar World 2009
Karen Yapoort, representing the DR, was chosen Miss World Ambar at the pageant held at the Riu Bambu in Bavaro. This is the first time a Dominican is chosen in the contest that has been held since the 70s. 28 candidates participating, representing countries in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa.
Golden Bear Lodge set for November opening
The Golden Bear Lodge & Spa of Cap Cana, inspired on the life of golfer Jack Nicklaus, will be the first of the Zoetry Collection of luxury hotels, a new brand of the US hotel chain AmResorts.
The boutique resort, located in the Cap Cana tourism and residential development, is scheduled for a 1 November 2009 opening. It seeks to cater to discerning travelers and to offer tropical golfing for vacationers of all ages
It is set between the championship Punta Espada golf course and the Las Iguanas course, under construction. Punta Espada has been a stop on the PGA Tour's Champions Tour in 2008 and 2009.
Agua reopens as Zoetry Resorts Agua Punta Cana
The Zoetry Wellness & Spa Resorts chain is opening the Zoetry Agua Punta Cana, this time as a Zoetry Resort brand, on 1 November. Zoetry Agua Punta Cana is the former Agua boutique hotel, located in Uvero Alto, in northern Punta Cana featuring 53 cane-thatched suites with beach views. The boutique resort will feature butler services and that of a personal golf concierge at its 53 cane-thatched suites with beach views.
This is the first Zoetry Resorts property in the DR. DR1 Travel News had erroneously confused it last week with the first Zoetry Collections property, the Golden Bear Lodge & Spa that also will be opening 1 November at Cap Cana, in the Punta Cana area.
Mexican soap filmed in Colonial City
The Televisa Mexico production team brought the actors of the popular Sortilegio soap to film the scenes around Plaza de Espana in the Colonial City, the sea-bordering Malecon boulevard, Avenida Mella and at the Las Americas International Aiport in Santo Domingo. The Mexican production is directed by Monica Miguel. Star roles are by Jacqueline Bracamontes and William Levy. Other actors are Ana Brenda, Gabriel Soto, David Zepeda, Daniela Romo, David Zepeda, Gabriel Soto and Juan Llanes, among others.
Proepta: from Mexico to the DR
In its 20th year in business, the leading Mexican hotel supplier, ProEpta chose Punta Cana to locate its first branch and showroom outside Mexico. Company executives are betting on the continued growth of the area.
Jacobo Klip, one of the partners who came from Mexico for the opening of their Dominican showroom at AC Delco Plaza on the Veron-Bavaro highway on 6 August, said they chose the DR because they saw a maturing market. "Hotels now are seeking to be different one from another. And we can help them be different, each in their own market," he said. He stresses their customized service, which he said was the secret to their growth in Mexico.
Boris Mareyna, another partner, says that because they are the leading supplier of hotels in Mexico and buy goods in mass volumes for several chains at once, they can pass on to customers the extra savings. Furthermore, he made the point that they stock merchandise at their 500 square meter warehouse for immediate delivery. "We take the headache of importing away from the client," he said, explaining they are logistics wizards. "And when we sell 1,000 plates, we deliver 1,000 plates, he said explaining they take responsibility for any broken plate.
While their focus is on large orders, he said they would also cater to orders of whole sets for villa home owners in the area, with the client understanding they will be delivered the goods in a box, not fancy packing as a retail store would offer. He explained they will soon be accepting credit card sales.
Nathan Israel, another partner who came for the opening, said throughout the years they witnessed how Mexico switched to tropicalizing its design to develop its own identity. They would like to contribute to hotels and restaurants in the DR developing their own identity and lines.
The company offers food and beverage, room furnishings, linens, decorations and amenities and supplies for lobby and other public areas.
Rony Zagursky ([email protected]), country manager for the Dominican Republic, made the point the company chose the DR for their first international operation attracted by the dynamic growth of the tourism industry and their confidence the DR will continue to attract foreign investment.
