DATE in Punta Cana
Hard Rock Cafe Hotel & Casino Punta Cana (former Moon Palace Casino, Golf & Spa Resort) will host the 11th Dominican Annual Tourism Exchange 2010, the leading travel mart bringing together buyers and suppliers for Dominican tourism. The National Hotel & Restaurants Association and the Ministry of Tourism sponsor the event. It is expected to be attended by more than 100 tour operators from the main tourism markets in North America, Latin America and Europe.
The Hard Rock Cafe Hotel is located in Macao Beach area, to the north of Punta Cana.
The hotel that originally opened as Moon Palace Casino, Golf & Spa Resort is being re-branded as the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana.
Master of the Ocean 2010 final results
Luciano Gonzalez is the 2010 Master of the Ocean, taking the crown from the defending champion, Emmanuel David Rondon, who finished second. Gonzalez won the event by accumulating the most points in each discipline of the Master of the Ocean water sport triathlon in Cabarete, organized by Marcus Bohm. Chilean Manuel Selman, was named surf champion for the second consecutive year, while Alex Soto took the crown for Master kitesurf and Eduardo Castillo Torres for Master windsurf. Other winners included 14-year-old Nico Suriel, who won the Future Master award and Audrey Meyer who was named Best Woman. Manuel Selman and Manuel Rondon won the Aerial, for the best trick.
US$10,000 was split among all winners with the Master champion, Gonzalez, taking home the biggest prize of US$2,000. In its eight edition, the Master of the Ocean attracted large crowds to Playa Encuentro. Visitors enjoyed five full days of competition, live music on the beach and night parties throughout Cabarete. PGA returns to Cap Cana
Cap Cana has announced the celebration of the third PGA Tours in the Dominican Republic. The Cap Cana Championship, which brings leading senior golf legends to Dominican shores, will take place 22 to 28 March. The event follows Pro Am, which will be played on 24 and 25 March. The purse at the Cap Cana Championship is US$1.6 million and there will be a US$240,000 prize for the winner of the championship.
Ricardo Hazoury, president of the Cap Cana board of directors, said that 78 professional players are expected. The tournament will be 54 holes and stroke-play. Cap Cana Championship director Efren Garcia Estrada said that 2009 championship winner Keith Fergus has confirmed his attendance. Also confirmed are Bernhard Langer, John Cook, Jay Haas, Jeff Sluman and Andy Bean.
Mike Stevens, president of the PGA Tours Champions Tour praised the Dominican event, saying that it has enabled them to continue with the expansion of the Champions Tour that is also being played in South Korea and Canada in 2010. "The Cap Cana Championship is an example of recognition that has permitted that our brand and our players to achieve important positioning at a global level".
Deputy Tourism Minister Magaly Toribio represented the Ministry of Tourism at the event.
Carnival continues
March is also a month for carnival in the Dominican Republic. Celebrations continue on Tuesday, 2 March with a Carnival Night at the Teatro Monina Sola at the Centro Cultural Narciso Gonzalez at 8pm. A Carnival Arts & Crafts Fair is being held from 1 to 6 March, 10am to 11pm at the Plaza Juan Baron on the Malecon.
The grand carnival procession in Santo Domingo starts at 3pm on Sunday, 7 March with more than 160 carnival troupes and floats parading from the Obelisk to the Banco Agricola.
A Dominican Carnival photo exhibition continues until 7 March at the Parque Independencia Public Art Gallery.
Carnival goes east to Punta Cana on Saturday, 20 March. More than 1,000 carnival characters from 15 provinces nationwide will parade along Boulevard 1 de noviembre in Punta Cana Village from 4pm. The event is being organized by the Puntacana Group, which operates Punta Cana International Airport and the Puntacana Resort.
