Tourism flows up for sixth month
Tourism in the Dominican Republic has continued to improve over the numbers from 2009, a year of practically no growth. For the sixth straight month tourism was up over the 2009 figures. In February, according to the Central Bank, the number of tourists increased by 2.14% over 2009. In absolute numbers, this means that there were 8,292 more visitors in 2010. In January, the numbers showed a 5.81% increase.
Minister of Tourism Francisco Javier Garcia made the announcement during the 44th International Tourism Exchange in Berlin (ITB Berlin). Javier Garcia was accompanied by National Hotel and Restaurant Association president Haydee Kuret de Rainieri, Dominican ambassador in Germany Rafael Calventi Gavino and the director of the Tourism Promotion Office in Germany, Petra Cruz.
The Central Bank report states that more than 800,000 tourists arrived in the first two months of the year.
German classic music at the Cathedral
A concert of German classical music is scheduled for Friday, 19 March 2010 at 7:30pm at the Basilica Catedral de Santo Domingo. The Ambassador of Germany Christian Germann and Cardinal Nicolas Jesus Lopez Rodriguez are inviting to the concert. The event is a German contribution to the celebration of the year of Santo Domingo as Cultural Capital of the Americas.
Playa Dorada's Caribbean Cigar Night
The Playa Dorada Golf Club is inviting to the Playa Dorada Caribbean Cigar Night 2010 on Friday, 19 March at 7:30pm. Jazz music by Sandy Gabriel at the golf club. The event is described as an evening devoted to the epicurean art of cigars, in the company of the biggest names of the industry. These include Macanudo cigars, ZippoBlu, Davidoff, Montecristo, La Aurora, Fuentes, among others. Admission price of RD$4,000 per person includes dinner, drinks and a spectacular gift pack. Bani group wins Best Carnival prize
The southwestern Bani folklore group, Robalagallina, won the first price among competing folkloric groups in the Santo Domingo National Carnival Parade on 7 March. The group won RD$250,000. The jury recognized the group for their originality, beauty, and creativity. Some 25 awards in eight categories were awarded.
Best of carnival
A selection of the best of carnival in February and March throughout the Dominican Republic will parade along 1 Noviembre Street of the Puntacana Village neighborhood in Punta Cana on Saturday, 20 March.
At the end of the parade, the party gets started with the rhythms of merengue. For information call 809-959-2262
