Royal Slam record met with Cap Cana white marlin
Jack MacCluskey has become the youngest fisherman to catch all species billfish during the Dominican Republic's Royal Slam competition, local press reported on Sunday. MacCluskey completed his record by capturing two fish in two nations: a swordfish off the Florida Keys in the US and a striped white marlin off the coast of Cap Cana real estate and hotel development in the Punta Cana area.
MacCluskey is only 9 years old. Because of the extensive travel involved to achieve the Royal Slam, only 100 people worldwide have achieved the target, which took MacCluskey 10 months. The nine fish species are the spearfish, the swordfish, the black marlin, the striped white marlin both the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean versions of blue marlin and sailfish.
MacCluskey breaks a record set by Wes Davis, who was 10 when he set the record.
To qualify for the record, all fish must be caught and then released in line with the rules published by the International Game Fishing Association.
Shakira records Dominican merengue
Best-selling Colombian songstress and composer Shakira was in Santo Domingo over the weekend to record the track "Loca con su Tiguere" by Edward Bello, El Cata. The Dominican singer-songwriter recently won a Casandra Awards nomination for his innovative music. Shakira heard his music and came to put her voice to his lyrics. She visited with her boyfriend, Antonio de la Rua. Afterwards, she traveled to Haiti, in her role as UNICEF goodwill ambassador.
Benefit golf tournament
The Punta Cana International Airport and Hard Rock Cafe are sponsoring a benefit, "Sun & Fun Charity Golf Tournament" on 24 and 25 April at the La Cana and Corales golf courses at Puntacana Resort & Club. Funds will go to two corporate social responsibility programs sponsored by the Grupo Puntacana in the region. These are the Regional Youth Golf Program and the Coral Reef Protection Program, both under the Puntacana Ecological Foundation. The golf program encourages new talent among young people from the neighboring town of Veron. The coral reef program works to restore and protect coral reefs in the area and develop new attractions such as underwater museums.
On Saturday, 24 April, the tournament will be played in La Cana, designed by P.B. Dye. It will be a scramble tournament, in which each player takes their turn hitting the ball but the players choose which ball to hit next. On Sunday, 25 April, the tournament will be played at Corales, designed by Tom Fazio, but it will be a best ball tournament, where each person plays their own ball and the one with the lowest score is counted for the hole. The Corales course is scheduled for inauguration this month.
