Rural tourism
A new website inviting domestic and international tourists to discover rural tourism in the Dominican Republic was recently launched. Created by Miguelina Butron, a former Viva Dominicus sales executive, the site features a selection of companies that offer alternatives to sun and sand tourism. First options offered are gastronomic tourism, agri-tourism, adventure and ecotourism packages. It also offers excursions to Barahona and Enriquillo Lake, Bahia de las Aguilas beach, Jima waterfalls, Playa Rincon in Samana, waterfalls in Blanco, in Monsenor Nouel, the rain forest reserve in Quita Espuela, San Francisco de Macoris and cacao trails in Salcedo, the Ebano Verde precious tree reserve near Constanza, hiking to Duarte Peak and Valle del Tetero.

Last minute travel
Flash sales are becoming mainstream for travel today. The YPartnership bulletin reports that a growing percentage of American leisure travelers are taking last minute vacations. The reason: the frenetic pace of contemporary life. "Simply coordinating schedules to get time away from work represents a greater obstacle than the actual cost of the trip for many travelers today," says US travel guru Peter Yesawich. He himself is surprised that research now shows that three out of every 10 Americans actually took a last minute trip last year, and those trips were planned an average of just six days prior to departure.
He says that travel marketers are reaching out to travelers with impulsive offers as suppliers try to liquidate what would otherwise be unsold inventory. He is also surprised to find that one out of seven recipients of unsolicited emails reports purchasing a travel service as a result. "Yes, one might expect the recipients of these offers to book a weekend flight or hotel room on a whim, but a complete vacation package (38%) or a cruise (21%)? Unprecedented."
Another trend he mentions is that one out of four leisure travelers took a vacation in their local area as an alternative to vacationing in a destination that would have required more extensive travel during the past year. He concludes that this type of vacation appears to be "another manifestation of the trend toward more impulsive vacation behavior."
Play Ball!
The Dominican Professional Winter Baseball Championship is ongoing at six ballparks nationwide: the Quisqueya Stadium in Santo Domingo, the Francisco Micheli Stadium in La Romana, the Tetelo Vargas Stadium in San Pedro de Macoris, both in the southeast, the Julian Javier Stadium in San Francisco de Macoris in the northeast, and the Cibao Stadium in Santiago. Games tickets cost from RD$250 to RD$550. Watch the Leones del Escogido and Tigres del Licey, the Santo Domingo rivals. Other teams are the Toros del Este (La Romana), Estrellas Orientales (San Pedro), Gigantes del Cibao (San Francisco de Macoris), and the Aguilas Cibaenas (Santiago). The champions of the 2009-2010 season are the Leones del Escogido.

What's the story on weather?
Storms in October and November are unusual in the Caribbean, but they happen. The DR1 Weather Forum is one of the best places to go for updates on how the storms could affect travel plans in the Dominican Republic. See the updates on Tomas as it makes its way south of the DR and is expected to swerve to the north into Haiti and on to the northwest of the DR.
