US$4.24 billion in tourism revenues
Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia expects tourism receipts for 2010 to have reached US$4.24 billion, making it the leading hard currency revenue producer in the country. He says preliminary data shows the year will close with a 4% growth compared to 2009. Tourist arrivals are expected to be 3% more than in 2009, according to preliminary statistical reports of the Central Bank. The Ministry of Tourism says that the government invested US$918.3 million in roads and other public works in tourism destinations.
Two more long weekends in January
2011 began with the New Year’s Eve/New Year’s long weekend. But the good news for many is that there are two more long weekends coming up this January.
This year’s Three King’s Day, which in the DR marks the end of the Christmas holidays, will be celebrated on Monday, 10 January. That means, children will receive their late gifts on 6 January, but will have extra time to play with them as schools wont reopen until the 11th or 12th of January.
And then, to commemorate the protector Virgin Mary of the Dominican Republic, the Virgen de la Altagracia, Dominicans will get Friday, 21 January off, but also Monday, 24 January that celebrates the birthday of Juan Pablo Duarte, the founding father of the Dominican nationality.
