Santo Domingo East ecotourism route
The Ministry of Environment is backing an 'Ecotour' route taking visitors to the National Aquarium, the Los Tres Ojos cave and the Cachon de la Rubia springs. The route uses buses that run on natural gas, costs RD$100 and includes the admission fee to these three natural attractions.
The tours depart on the hour on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 9am to 6pm from the Parque Juan Pablo II on Ave. Venezuela in eastern Santo Domingo.
The EcoTour Santo Domingo Este is an initiative by the Ministry of Environment with the collaboration of the OMSA governmental bus company, Santo Domingo East Municipality and the Ministry of Tourism with sponsorship also from Orange Dominicana.
The first tour was on Sunday, 16 January.
At the National Aquarium, visitors can see more than 250 marine creatures exhibited in large tanks and a tunnel for the observation of sharks and turtles.
The Cueva de los Tres Ojos takes visitors underground to explore caverns with stalagmites and stalactites, and underground lagoons. Cachon de la Rubia, the lesser known of the three natural sights, is located on the outskirts of Greater Santo Domingo, with its attraction of springs, natural trails and exuberant forests.

The playoffs in the east
For the first time in the history of Dominican winter baseball, the playoffs will be played in the southeastern cities of La Romana and San Pedro de Macoris. The Estrellas Orientales won the right to dispute the Toros of La Romana in a final game they won 3-0 on Monday evening against the Gigantes del Cibao from San Francisco de Macoris.
The media has named the playoffs, "The Sugar Cane Series" relative to the sugar-cane producing region of the east.
This is the first time ever that the playoffs are being played away from Santo Domingo, since both the capital city's teams were eliminated early on. La Romana and San Pedro fans are very supportive of their teams, promising an exciting 9-5 playoffs games as the teams have but a half-hour commute between each other. This will be the fourth time that the Toros have made it to the playoffs. They won the Dominican championship for the first time in 1994-95 season. The Estrellas won the championship in 1954 and 1968, and it has been 11 years since they were last in a playoff.
