La Serie del Caribe
The Caribbean League Series opens in Santo Domingo with a first game on Thursday, 2 February at 2pm matching Venezuela against Puerto Rico. Mexico plays against host Dominican Republic at 6pm. The series ends on Tuesday, 7 February.
The Dominican Republic has won 18 Caribbean Series pennants from 1971 to 2010. The most recent victories were in the 2001, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2010 championships.
In this year's tournament that opens on Thursday at the Quisqueya Ball Park in Santo Domingo, the Leones del Escogido are representing the DR. The Escogido has only won three of the 18 championships, in 1988, 1990 and 2010. The Tigres del Licey, also representing the city of Santo Domingo, has been the Dominican team to win most championships with 10.
US$329 million to improve Dominican airports
Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom) told Listin Diario in an interview that it has invested US$329 million in equipment and improvements in the image, security and efficiency of airport services since it won the contract to manage government airports in the Dominican Republic. In the interview, director general Andrew O'Brian said that Aerodom has invested more than originally agreed. He said the company contracted improvements for US$292 million when signing the contract in 2000.
Aerodom operates six airports in the Dominican Republic: Las Americas International (SDQ) in Santo Domingo, Aeropuerto La Isabela (JBQ) in the Province of Santo Domingo, El Catey (AZS) and Arroyo Barril (EPS) in Samana, Maria Montez (BRX) in Barahona and Gregorio Luperon in Puerto Plata (POP).
Improvements have been made at El Catey Airport in Samana, and at Maria Montez Airport in Barahona, where works have included the reconstruction of the runway, waterproofing and the security gate. In the northern Santo Domingo airport of La Isabela, work has progressed on the construction of the second phase of hangars, improvements for servicing executive aviation and construction of heliports. At Las Americas, Aerodom is completing the remodeling of the south terminal with a new glass-fronting facade, and has made improvements to the security and migration area. Puerto Plata International (POP) is undergoing a remodeling program that will be completed by the summer.
Aerodom is owned by Advent International, the global private equity firm that also operates the international airport in Mexico City.
