New Carnival ship brings 5D to La Romana
Cruise ship travelers on board the new Carnival Breeze, which launches in June 2012, will be able to enjoy the new Thrill 5D Theater that presents high-definition, 5D film with tangible enhancements similar to theme park attractions that interact with the viewer - effects like squirting water, bubbles, and chairs that tickle legs, blow air on guests' necks and poke them in their seat. In addition, the seats themselves will move and vibrate to simulate motion, adding what Carnival describes as a fifth dimension. "It's kind of like combining a ride like Universal's Terminator 3D with Spider-Man with a dose of Disney's Stitch ride", says a Carnival release. The movies will be five-minute versions of popular family films.
Carnival Cruise Lines' Fun Ship 2.0 program is a US$500 million amenity initiative that features this and other new entertainment options, including celebrity partnerships such as comedian George Lopez, DJ Irie and Food Network star Guy Fieri's Guy's Burger Joint, featuring his signature burgers.
The ship departs from Miami, Florida on eight-day southern Caribbean tours. It will touch at Grand Turk, La Romana, Curacao and Aruba. Departure dates are 24 November 2012, 22 December 2012, 16 February 2013 and 30 March 2013, 27 April 2013.
The ship has capacity for 3,690 guests (double occupancy).

EcoTouristic mountain lodge
A new improved lodging option for backpackers and adventure travelers is the Complejo Ecoturistico Rio Blanco in the Bonao central region. The lodge is aimed at travelers who enjoy hikes, horseback riding and nature. A donation from USAID helped refurbish and expand this mountain facility by improving the dining room, 10 cabins and two meeting rooms. The USAID funds covered treating the main cabin wood, renovating five rooms, installing water heaters and refurbishing the kitchen. Visitors at the lodge can visit cacao and coffee growing areas, and local arts and crafts makers. The lodge is reached via the Duarte Highway to Bonao and the Carretera La Salvia-Los Quemados to Blanco-Hoyo del Pino. It is about an hour's drive from either Santo Domingo or Santiago city. The average temperature in the area is 22C. The area is also known for its Yuna, Blanco, Tireo, Avispa and Juma rivers, and the Rodeo, La Ceiba and Arroyo Atravesado waterfalls. There is also an Indian sanctuary, El Ultimo Cielo, where a large rock with more than 300 petroglyphs can be viewed. The project was developed by the Federacion de Campesinos hacia el Progreso (FCHP).

Whale Watching Season in Samana
The Samana whale-watching season is under way. This is the best opportunity to view the giant humpback whales as they frolic in the Atlantic Ocean waters of the northeastern Dominican Republic. The whales migrate from the North Atlantic to the warm waters of the Dominican Republic's northeastern coast to mate and give birth. More than 1,500 humpbacks visit the bay, with as many as 300 present at any given time during mating season. The World Wildlife Fund considers Samana Bay one of the best places in the world to watch whales. There is something for everyone - the outer bay is where you might find aggressive males competing for the favors of willing females, and the sheltered inner bay is one of the world's leading humpback nurseries. Whale-watching boats depart from Samana piers until the end of March. The popular excursions can be arranged at the Port of Samana or from hotels in the province and travel agencies.
Excursions can be booked at most hotels in Samana and Sabana de la Mar (El Seibo) for a day's outing, but it is recommended to stay in Samana overnight for a more complete experience.
