Final preparations are under way for DominicanaModa 2012, the leading Dominican fashion week. This year, the Elie Saab collection will close the popular event that takes place at the Hotel Embajador. This year’s event, organized by Mirka Morales, Socrates McKinney and Fidel Lopez, will take place from 22-27 October with sponsorship from Occidental Hotels, the Ministry of Tourism and Brugal 1888.
Now in its seventh year, Dominicana Moda is regarded as one of the top five fashion events held in Latin America, and at least 40 journalists from Latin America, Europe and the United States have registered to cover it. More than 50 collections by Dominican and international designers will be shown. Venezuelan Angel Sanchez is responsible for the opening, but there will also be collections by Colombian and Caribbean designers on Tuesday, 23, the international day of the week, sponsored by Pro Export of Colombia and Caribbean Export Development Agency of the Caribbean.
Dominican designers participating this year and presenting their collections include: Leonel Lirio, Gutierrez-Marcano, Giannina Azar, Magaly Tiburcio, Jose Jhan Rodriguez, Oriet Domenech, Moises Quesada, Larissa Salcedo, Jacqueline Then, Jusef Sanchez, Wendy Luzon, Damaris Rubio, Modesta Castillo, Cynthia Avelino and Luis Dominguez.
Dominican brands Camila, Blue Country, Velero and Cosita Linda will be shown. In addition, children’s collections by Linandra Javier, Karla Riggs and Blue Island by Madelaine Morel will feature. Children who benefit from the work of many foundations in the Dominican Republic will participate in the shows.
New talents to be showcased this year include: Nelson Tavarez, Emmy Jorge, Luis Arismendy, Miguel Genao, Lindsey Soto, Yndra Rodriguez, Keyther Estevez and Carlos Nunez. Altos de Chavon School of Design will also present the runway walk by the best of its 2012 graduates. Dominicans abroad are also represented by the collections of Lucia Rodriguez, Yohanny Gursey, Solange Jimenez and Jose Duran.
This year, the first DM Award will be presented to Dominican top model Avril Guerrero who will come this year for the event.
New for this year, is Santo Domingo’s Fashion Night Out 2012, to take place on Friday, 19 October prior to the opening of the fashion week. The event includes shopping until 12 midnight with many stores offering bargains and entertainment that evening.
New domestic airport to be built
The director of the Airport Authority, Aristides Fernandez Zucco has announced that a new airport terminal will be built next to the Cueva de las Maravillas in San Pedro de Macoris province. In a meeting with authorities in San Pedro, he said that the aim is to encourage tourism, and that there would be around 8 to 10 flights a day. Tourists would arrive by air before being transported by road to the historic town of San Pedro and then sailing to the islands of Saona and Catalina.
He went on to say that similar terminals would also be built in Pedernales, Montecristi and Constanza.
He was joined by the Senator for San Pedro de Macoris Jose Maria Sosa, governor Felix De los Santos, mayor Tony Echavarria, chairman of the board of the Cueva de las Maravillas Foundation Julio Giraldez Casasnova, Central University of the East Rector Jose Hazim Frappier, General Manager of Coral Costa Caribe hotel Juan Dolio William Polanco, and Patricio Vigouraux Brzouc, director of the Barcelo Capella Beach Resort, also in Juan Dolio.
Zucco said that the new terminal would be built with a combination of public and private funding and that along with other domestic terminals it would make it easier for tourists to travel around the country and visit a wider range of attractions and natural resources.
Meeting Planners to gather in Punta Cana
The Dominican Annual MICE Exchange is the Caribbean's newest trade show set to be held in Punta Cana this year. The event is being organized to provide meeting planners and incentive houses with an effective program where they can meet hoteliers, suppliers and destination management consultants in a limited amount of time. The event also seeks to attract leading buyers. Riu hotel chain promotes its adults-only hotel
Spanish hotel chain Riu is promoting its recently remodeled Riu Palace Macao in northern Punta Cana as an adults-only resort. The 364-room resort is the first in the chain to offer this modality in the Americas and the Caribbean. The company has invested US$13.5 million in new decor for the rooms that include amenities such as flat-screen televisions, shower cabins and whirlpool tubs. In the food area, renovations and additions include the Cafe Cappuccino, Volare Italian restaurant, Pancho grill steak-house, Kabuki Japanese restaurant, Krystal fusion restaurant and the El Patio buffet restaurant. A new pool bar has replaced the children’s area, the Copacabana outdoor amphitheater was renovated and there is a new casino. Guests can also enjoy the spa services at the nearby Riu Palace Punta Cana and Riu Palace Bavaro. The resort’s shopping areas and the Pacha discotheque have also been remodeled.
