JetBlue flies into Samana
Samana is now closer to the United States since JetBlue began its nonstop service from New York's JFK International Airport on 17 November. Flights are on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Samana is the sixth destination in the Dominican Republic served by the airline. JetBlue is the airline with the largest number of flights to the Dominican Republic.
In the official press release, the vice president of network planning and partnerships for the airline, Scott Laurence said: "Samana is a beach paradise in the Dominican Republic, a secret worth discovering. We have no doubts our customers will rush to learn everything that this tropical location has to offer."
"Dominican Republic's Samana Peninsula features pure ecological bliss with beaches and charming towns like Samana, Las Galeras and Las Terrenas," said Francisco Javier Garcia, Minister of Tourism for Dominican Republic. "JetBlue's direct flight to Samana will bring new visitors to our northeast coast, create a stronger economy, and ensure that dozens of unique hotels, resorts, shops, diverse attractions and delightful restaurants will receive more visitors."
"The government, through the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur) and the private sector, represented by Bahia Principe, Amhsa Marina Grand Paradise Samana, Sublime Samana at Viva Residence, Puerto Bahia Marina & Residence, Coral Hospitality Corporation, Vista del Cayo, Balcones del Atlantico and El Portillo Beach Club & Spa, all members of the Samana Hotel and Tourism Companies Association (Ahetsa), and our company, did not rest until we managed to get an airline like JetBlue to lay their eyes on this paradise in the country," said Monika Infante Henriquez, speaking for Aerodom the airport operator. "We trust this new route will be warmly embraced by Dominicans traveling from the United States and the thousands of Americans who choose the Dominican Republic for their vacations every year," she said.
JetBlue flights arrive at 1:09pm and the return flight leaves at 2:05pm, arriving in New York at 5:02pm.
As part of the official launch, JetBlue donated computers and books to the Liceo Manuela Mullix Fermin - a school just outside Samana - through its longtime community partner, the Dream (Dominican Republic Education and Mentoring) Project.
In the Dominican Republic, JetBlue also serves La Romana, Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, Santiago and Santo Domingo with flights to Boston, Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood, New York, Orlando and San Juan. The airline has plans for two more routes linking San Juan with Punta Cana and Santiago.
US press focuses on Samana
With the start of the nonstop JetBlue New York flight to Samana, the northeastern destination is beginning to receive coverage in the mainstream US press. For instance, New York Magazine recently featured a short article on Samana as a destination.

For the second year in a row the International Association of Golf Tour Operators, the international golf industry trade association, has awarded the Dominican Republic the prestigious IAGTO honor as the Caribbean and Latin America's "most unforgettable golf destination."
The Ministry of Tourism said that the DR was named the "2013 Golf Destination of the Year in the Caribbean and Latin America. The DR won the award for its "magnificent, sun-kissed golf courses set amid breathtaking coastlines, azure seas, rich mountains and lush green tropical fairways".
"The Dominican Republic is thrilled to receive this distinguished award as the best golf destination in the entire Caribbean and Latin America in 2013 from the golf world's most savvy travel planners," said Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism spokesperson Petra Cruz, who received the honor on behalf of the country at the Tivoli Marina Vilamoura in the Algarve, Portugal.

Judges nominate the best performing golf destinations enjoyed by their golf travelling clients and consider the following criteria: customer satisfaction, quality of golf courses and accommodations, value, professional conduct of suppliers, support from the local tourism industry and accessibility to tee times.
