It's carnival time in the DR
February and March are two of the best months of the year for visiting the Dominican Republic. Weather is at its best with cool early mornings and evenings, but warm and sunny afternoons. It's also the month for the Carnival celebrations that take place all around the country. It is a time to take great pictures. The best carnivals are held in La Vega, Bonao and Santiago, with activities as of noon on every Sunday in February. Come March, the best of these carnival and smaller representations from other cities in the country, come together for the parades in Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata, Punta Cana and La Romana.
In La Vega this year, there is a complete schedule of top popular music performers booked for the La Vega Olympic Stadium. The schedule is:
10 February: 8pm, Jowell and Randy
17 February: 8pm, Don Omar
24 February: 8pm, Prince Royce
Puerto Plata's carnival also takes place on Sundays, with celebrations starting at 2pm at the Malecon, with music shows at 7pm. The grand parade is set for Saturday, 23 March.
Santo Domingo has its own Carnival, with a special event taking place on Sundays at 5pm with Bonye at the San Francisco Ruins.
DR stand wins in FITUR
The colorful and modern Dominican Republic stand was awarded the best stand design award for the 33rd FITUR travel fair that closed on Sunday 3 February in Madrid. Fitur is the leading Spanish market travel fair.
In the country categories, this year's winners were the Tourism Promotion Council of Mexico, Tourism Portugal and the Tourism Office of the Dominican Republic. The jurors awarded the prize for the professional disposition to the marketing needs of the product, communication, promotion and identity of the stand with the product, and the originality and innovativeness of the design.
A total of 166 countries participated in the 33rd Feria International de Turismo (Fitur) from 30 January to 3 February.
The Dominican Republic stand covered an area of 365 square meters and a bright yellow, red and blue and white color scheme was used, in commemoration of the 2013 celebration of the bicentennial of founding father Juan Pablo Duarte's birth.
Javier Valdez, when presenting the award to the Dominican Republic said: "The jurors, when choosing the Dominican Republic for the best stand award took into consideration the color schemes of bands of colors that floated over the stand, generating an attractive and different visual effect, the open space that drew attention and where the distinct areas of information for different marketing activities were carried out."
Minister of Tourism Francisco Javier Garcia presided over the Dominican participation in Fitur and expressed his pleasure at the award.
Air Europa takes place of Iberia
The low-cost competitor to Iberia, Air Europa has announced it is increasing its frequencies to fill the void left with the cancellation of Iberia flights to Santo Domingo as of 1 April 2013. Air Europa says it will double its daily flight schedule. Air Europa flies Airbus A330-200 aircraft. Air Europa offers connections from Italy and UK among other European cities.
British Airways ups its flights to Punta Cana
British Airways has announced that its scheduled twice-weekly service from London Gatwick to Punta Cana will be increased to three times per week. The flights will be on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday from London Gatwick to Punta Cana starting October 2013. While there are alternative charter operations, British Airways is the only UK scheduled carrier that operates regular service to an airport in the Dominican Republic.
Copa increases its flights to Punta Cana
Starting 18 June 2013, Copa Airlines announced it is increasing its Panama City - Punta Cana service, making it easier for Latin American tourists to fly to and from the Dominican Republic. The airline announced it is introducing four additional weekly flights. The overall operation of the airline now increases from 21 to 25 flights as of June of this year.
Copa is a member of the Star Alliance frequent traveler network.
TUI Travel to fly to Samana
Travelers from the UK can now enjoy convenient air service from London directly into Samana. TUI Travel announces the re-start of its direct flights from Gatwick to Samana's El Catey airport near Las Terrenas and Coson beach areas. The service starts 9 May and will continue all throughout the summer until 31 October.
