Travel to the DR continues to increase
Non-resident travel to the DR in July was up 3.62%, maintaining the positive trend that began in May. The year began with January, February and April showing declines in travel, but there have been slight increases in May, June and July, reports the Central Bank statistics department. Travel in July was up 16,415 compared to the same month in 2012. There was a 4.48% increase in non-resident travelers.
The Central Bank says that for the first seven months of the year, non-resident travel to the island is up 0.81%, with 23,505 more visitors and a total of 2,931,103 tourists so far.
Travel from North and South America continues to grow, but travel from Central America, Asia and Europe is down. Most tourists visiting the Dominican Republic from January to July 2013 came from North America (60.42%), followed by Europe (24.58%) and South America (10.18%), Central America and the Caribbean (4.57%) and the rest of the world (0.25%).
Travel from the US continued strong, with 83,577 more tourists in the first seven months of the year. Tourism from Russia is also having a good year, with an increase of 16,072 more passengers compared to last year. Other countries showing increases in numbers of tourists traveling to the DR are Germany (up 12,697 travelers), Sweden (up 5,917 travelers) and the UK (up 3,895 travelers). There also were increases in travel from Chile (up 8,359), and Brazil (up 4,469 travelers).
63.6% of tourists traveling to the Dominican Republic entered via the Punta Cana International Airport, 18.80% arrived by Santo Domingo's Las Americas, and 9.46% by the Puerto Plata International Airport.
New flights from Germany to Punta Cana and La Romana
The Ministry of Tourism reports that the German airline Condor and the TUI tour operator will be adding six new direct frequencies from Germany. Five of the weekly flights will be from Munich and Hamburg at the start of the 2013-2014 high season. The Ministry of Tourism says the flights will begin in November 2013. Three flights will be direct Condor connections from Munich to Punta Cana, and TUI will add two more weekly flights to Punta Cana. A third TUI flight will land in La Romana starting in November also.
Travel from Germany is increasing. In July travel from Germany to the DR already increased 20% compared to July 2012. Petra Cruz, director of the Tourism Office in Frankfurt said that the increases are the result of good communication strategies and cooperation with the leading market players implemented by Minister Francisco Javier Garcia. Germany is the second largest source of European tourists for the Dominican Republic after France.
Art galleries tour
Organized by the Dominican Republic Art Galleries Association, every third Thursday of the month from August to December, the country's leading art galleries are staying open until late with special activities for visitors. This is a wonderful way to become familiar with quality Dominican art. The gallery owners themselves will be available for explanations about the artists.

The event allows everyone involved in the cigar world to interact by bringing together cigar manufacturers, retailers and consumers. The ProCigar Festival 2014 will be held from 16-21 February 2014. Events start at Casa de Campo in La Romana, in the southeast with a visit to Tabacalera de Garcia and lodging at the world famous resort. Next, the group travels north to the cigar capital of the world, Santiago de los Caballeros for visits to cigar factories and tobacco field tours. Participants will tour General Cigar, Davidoff, Matasa, La Aurora, Corporacion Cigar Export, Tabacalera La Alianza, La For Dominicana and the Fuente Foundation.
The organizers have included a tour to Cayo Arena Island, sailing on a catamaran along the north coast, seminars, a charity poker tournament, merengue lessons and more. Gala dinners, premium drinks and local cuisine tasting are also on the agenda. The closing event is a charity auction in benefit of the Voluntariado de Jesus con los Ninos, a non-profit organization for sick children, and the Sociedad San Vicente de Paul, a retirement home for low-income elders.
