Elton John at Altos de Chavon
Count the days. Iconic singer and composer Elton John will soon be taking the stage of Altos de Chavon in La Romana for the first time on Friday, 28 February. Thursday, the 27th is a holiday in the DR so many will be taking that Friday off too. Over the weekend, Dominican fans learned that Elton John travels with his own piano that needs to be transported on a private jet and is valued at US$1 million.
Emil Ysona of Acego, the concert organizers, said that if the piano is damaged in any way en route, the concert will be cancelled. The announcement about the piano makes local fans aware about the piano that was especially designed for him by Yamaha in 2011 and around which he has built his newest greatest hits concert that first opened in Las Vegas' Caesars Palace in 2011.
The piano is a Yamaha Grand that took four years to build and contains 68 LED video screens. During the show, images are projected on a giant screen and are matched by identical images on the piano.
Tickets for the concert are US$140 general admission, US$230 VIP and US$320 special guests and US$500 front stage. They are for sale at uepa tickets.
Rich and famous at Avenida Venezuela dance club
Singing star Beyonce was accompanied by her husband, rapper Jay Z, at the Euphoria dance club on Santo Domingo's Venezuela Avenue on Saturday, 8 February. The Venezuela Avenue is known for its collection of clubs for people who take Latin music dancing seriously. They were accompanied by Dominican baseball player Robinson Cano. According to reports, Jay Z is looking for new talent in the country. The general public celebrated their dancing at the club.
The John Walker & Sons' Voyager docking at La Marina de Casa de Campo
The Voyager museum-ship of the John Walker & Sons whisky brand will be docking at Casa de Campo's Marina on Saturday, 1 March, a day after the Elton John Concert at Altos de Chavon. This is the same 183-foot yacht that can be seen in the 2012 James Bond film, Skyfall.
The Voyager is on the third leg of its 2013-2014 epic journey that has taken it to tour major ports in Europe and Asia to promote premium Scottish whisky reminiscent of the marketing efforts of Alexander Walker who took his grandfather's business to all parts of the world. The Voyager is promoting premium whisky including Odyssey, the US$1,000 per bottle limited edition blend that is encased in an innovative tip-proof bottle.
Chris Copeland, Diageo VP of marketing and innovation for Latin America and the Caribbean for the Johnnie Walker brand said that early on in the 19th Century, John Walker and Sons became one of the first truly global brands by engaging ship captains to act as brand ambassadors when taking whisky from Scotland to the four corners of the world. This day, the company's Voyager ship celebrates the vision of the Walker family who grew a small grocery store founded in 1820, into the world's number one blended Scotch whisky brand.
The Caribbean Tour includes docking in Antigua, Trinidad, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Colombia and Venezuela ports prior to traveling to Miami, for its Florida stop on 7 April.
The ship will be at the Marina Casa de Campo from the 1-5 March when several events are planned with invitations sent out as part of the promotion of Scottish premium whisky labels.
February means carnival in the Dominican Republic
Carnival is in full bloom in the Dominican Republic with the playful costumed characters already having had their first Sunday of reveling on city streets. Carnival is big on Sundays in La Vega, Bonao, Santiago, and Greater Santo Domingo. There are smaller parades in Puerto Plata. Carnival in La Romana is on 22 February at La Marina de Casa de Campo and 23 February in La Romana City. Punta Cana's carnival, organized by Grupo Punta Cana at the Punta Cana Village, is set for Saturday, 8 March. Two carnival parades are planned for Santo Domingo, one on Av. Espana for Santo Domingo East, and another on Maximo Gomez up through Jose Contreras avenue on Sundays. These events lead up to the country's greatest parade, scheduled for Sunday, 2 March along the Malecon of Santo Domingo. The best carnival troupes from all over the country converge on the capital city for that grand carnival parade.
