New for this year also is Costa Crociere line's Costa Mediterranea that will be arriving from Miami, Florida. The cruise ship has capacity for 2,680 passengers. Other big cruise ships planning to moor in Samana Bay are Celebrity Cruises, Aida Cruises and Holland America Line.
Schad estimates Samana could receive 54,000 cruise ship passengers this season that begins in November 2014 and ends in April 2015.
International Cap Cana Billfish Shootout returns to Dominican Republic
The Ministry of Tourism announced the International Cap Cana Billfish Shootout is taking place this coming 4-11 June at the Cap Cana Marina in Punta Cana. The event, in its 20th year, is considered the grand prix of billfish tournaments.
In addition to world-class fishing, a full-week of accompanying festivities is planned including beach parties, golfing, and culinary competitions.
"We're thrilled to once again partner with the event and help them celebrate 20 years of success," said Magaly Toribio, marketing advisor for the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism. "Dominican Republic has a long-standing history as a major fishing destination thanks to location, as well as first-class facilities and hospitality. We look forward to our ongoing growth and success in the sport."
The billfish season in Dominican Republic typically runs from April to August each year. May and June are the best months for white marlin, while August is typically when the largest blue marlins are caught.
The Ministry explains that over the past few years, marlin numbers have thrived on the east coast due to the favorable environment and the installment of fish-attracting devices (FADs). These numbers were recognized by Billfish Report, which named the country the World's Top Billfish Destination in 2013.
The tournament host location, Marina Cap Cana, is just seven minutes from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) and offers five-star accommodations and 130 slips for the competition. The tournament ends on 10 June with an awards gala held at AlSol Luxury Village. A portion of event proceeds will be donated to local children's charities.

DR sponsors People en Espanol's "50 Most Beautiful" event
The Ministry of Tourism was a key sponsor of the People en Espanol's "50 Most Beautiful" issue gala at New York City's Capitale on 12 May. The 18th annual event followed in suit of the issue's "circus theme" and honored well-regarded celebrities in the US Hispanic market.
"We greatly value our ongoing partnership with People en Espanol and we're excited to once again align with an event that recognizes the diversity and beauty within Hispanic entertainment," said Magaly Toribio, marketing advisor for the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism. "The event was an incredible opportunity for Hollywood to see why Dominican Republic is the top tourism destination in the Caribbean. Regardless of what type of vacation they seek, Dominican Republic has it and more."

Travel to DR up 14.5% in April
The Central Bank reports that the number of tourist arrivals to the Dominican Republic was up by 56,433 foreign non-resident visitors in April, for a total of 445,018 travelers in the month, up 14.5% when compared to the same month in 2013. The main reason was the strong growth in European arrivals during the period.
Likewise, Dominican non-resident arrivals was up 18.8% in April. This is explained because Easter Week was in April this year. Last year it was in March.
Travel in the first quarter of the year is up 6.1%, with 1,841,675 travelers, including 106,037 more than during the same first four months in 2013.
