Iberia gets government approval to return to DR
Travelers to Europe are celebrating. Better fares are coming thanks to Iberia's return to Dominican skies after suspending its flights in April 2013 as part of the company's restructuring process. Last week, the local civil aviation board (JAC) approved their route permission to fly return between Madrid and Santo Domingo starting 1 September 2014. Iberia will have five weekly flights with an availability of around 3,000 seats. They will be flying modern Airbus A330s.
The JAC announced the approval of other routes, including Evelop Airlines on the Madrid-Punta Cana-Madrid route.
Expo Turismo 2014 Santiago
Expo Turismo 2014 Santiago is set for 6, 7 and 8 June at the Hodelpa Gran Almirante, organized by the Santiago Tourism Cluster. Event spokesperson and organizer Yomaris Gomez said that there would be financing for travel and many discounts, with participation from San Jose de las Matas, Tamboril and Santiago.
Pedro Clisante Street now for closed to traffic
Sosua has opened its first pedestrian street, Pedro Clisante Street. Restaurant owners and bars from Duarte to Dr. Rosen streets are free to set their tables out to attract pedestrians strolling by from 6pm to 6am. The move is expected to continue to create a pleasant atmosphere for partying and eating.
The decision had the blessing and support of Mayor Ilana Neumann of Sosua and Lorenzo Sancassani, the regional director for the Ministry of Tourism.
The creating of the pedestrian street was under discussion for several years but action has only been taken now.
The Ministry of Tourism is sponsoring music groups to entertain the crowds that hang out on the Sosua restaurant and bar row.
Embassy Suites prepares for July opening
The next hotel to open in Santo Domingo, the Embassy Suites at Silver Sun Gallery located at Av. Tiradente and Gustavo Mejia Ricart will have 180 rooms looking out to the Naco shopping and business district. The hotel will add 180 rooms to the city inventory, but also has eight meeting rooms with capacity for up to 700 people and a business center. The hotel is taking bookings starting 1 July. It will fill the shortage of rooms in the city now that the hotels Santo Domingo, Hispaniola and Jaragua have closed.
The hotel is managed by Hector Concari, former general manager of the Renaissance Jaragua. He pointed out that each of the rooms is a 50-60-square meter suite that means that it has a bedroom and a separate living room area that can also serve as a small office. Each room has a microwave and mini refrigerator. He said that the main hotel chef is Mexican, but the main restaurant will serve dishes with a Dominican touch. The lobby and meeting rooms are on the fourth floor.
