Frank Rainieri introduces Playa Corbanitos
The Puntacana Group has announced that construction of the Playa Corbanitos project in the southwestern province of Peravia near the city of Bani will start in March 2015. The main attraction is 25 km of beachfront and low average annual rainfall.
Two hotels with 400 rooms each, 35 villa lots and 450 condominiums will be built in phase one of the project. An ecological reserve area is part of the development. The developers say that buyers will be able to enjoy fishing, sailing, diving, hiking and other activities within the project. A pier will be built for boats.
This will be a low-density project for retirees or vacation homes for families, said Frank Rainieri, who heads the developing group. The Selman, Rizek and Read families are also investing in the project.
The project will also include services for Puntacana Resort & Club owners.
Playa Corbanitos covers an area of 15 million square meters with beachfront. Las Americas International Airport will be the main airport for tourists flying into the project, about an hour and a half drive from the airport and an hour from Santo Domingo.
Asonahores: It's been a great year for tourism
Top executives of the National Hotels & Tourism Association (Asonahores) say that 2014 has been the best year for tourism since 2007. A combination of internal and external factors has made the difference. In an interview with Hoy, Asonahores president Simon Suarez, vice president Arturo Villanueva and treasurer Joel Santos said that in the first 10 months of the year there has been an accumulated growth of 12%, with 14% in October alone. "The growth rate has been impressive compared to the rest of the Caribbean," said Villanueva. He highlighted improvements in road infrastructure and the investment of US$50 million in promotion that helps the DR compete with regional powerhouses. He did call for increased investment to keep the brand strong.
Joel Santos says that external factors include the European economic recovery, the dynamic United States economy and instability in North Africa, all of which have sent more tourists to visit the DR.
Simon Suarez commented that Santo Domingo has been the tourist destination with the greatest growth, in relative terms, in terms of hotel occupancy as well as visitors. He said that in order to maintain this growth the city needs a convention center, and the urban renewal program in the Colonial City and the Santo Domingo bypass highway to take truck traffic out of the city need to be completed. He commented that more tourists have been visiting the city since the completion of the Coral Highway that has significantly cut travel time from the east.
Suarez says city occupancy has increased 12.5% so far this year, and the inventory of hotel rooms is up 10%. New hotels are the Embassy Suites by Hilton Santo Domingo and the JW Marriott Blue Mall. The Santo Domingo Sheraton opened last year, too, after major renovations. The InterContinental is under construction and the Renaissance Jaragua is undergoing a major overhaul.
