Punta Cana gets direct Houston connection
United Airlines will fly direct to Punta Cana from Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport starting Saturday, 20 December 2014. The flight is part of United's plan to expand service from the Houston hub to Latin America and the Caribbean.
The flight will depart Houston (IAH) at 10:22am arriving at Punta Cana (PUJ) at 4:32pm for four hours and 10 minutes of travel time on Saturdays.
The year-round Saturday flights are extended to Sundays during periods of expected higher demand, including the Christmas holidays. Departure time for Sundays is 10:27am.
Christmas in Santo Domingo
Visitors to Santo Domingo over the holiday season should not miss the traditional Santo Domingo Cathedral Choir Concert on Christmas Day.
The concert starts punctually at 8pm, but to get a seat inside one must have a church or government connection or queue up no later than 6:30pm. Admission is free.
After the concert, drop by the Plaza de Espana, on the north side of Calle Las Damas to see the Colonial City tree, sponsored by Coca Cola.
The city government of Santo Domingo presents a live entertainment program at the new auditorium in the Park of the Lights (Parque de las Luces) at Calle Cesar Nicolas Penson near the intersection with Av. Alma Mater. The park is a LED-lights extravaganza.
Teeth of the Dog named Caribbean's Best Golf Course 2014
The Dominican Republic was named the Caribbean's Best Golf Destination 2014 in the World Golf Awards held last week, as part of the World Travel Awards that are regarded as the travel industry Oscars, while the World Golf Awards are regarded as the travel industry Oscars. The Dominican Republic's Casa de Campo Teeth of the Dog course repeated as the Caribbean's Best Golf Course 2014. Teeth of the Dog also won the award of Dominican Republic's Best Golf Course 2014, and Casa de Campo was named the Best Golf Hotel in the Dominican Republic. Caribbean Golf & Tours won the award for the Dominican Republic's Best Inbound Golf Tour Operator.
The country has 26 golf courses located across the country in beach, mountain and countryside landscapes.
The designers of the golf courses in operation include Pete Dye, P.B. Dye, Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones Sr., Gary Player, Tom Fazio and Nick Price.
"We could not be happier to be recognized for our destination and excellent tourism product by such a prestigious award in this sector," said Magaly Toribio, marketing advisor for the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism. "We are confident that our success will continue to grow as both amateur and professional players are drawn to our picturesque designer courses and world-class accommodations."
Winners are chosen based on the votes of golf travel and tourism professionals, such as senior executives, travel buyers, tour operators, agents and media professionals.
Puntacana named Green Resort of the Caribbean
Puntacana Resort & Club won the Caribbean's Leading Green Resort award at last week's World Travel Awards, regarded as the travel industry Oscars.
