Bavaro-Uvero Alto-Miches road now open to traffic
The Ministry of Public Works has announced the opening of the extension of the Autopista del Coral (Circuito del Este) that leads to northern Punta Cana in time for the peak Christmas holidays. The stretch from Bavaro to Uvero Alto and Miches, some 70 km, is now open for general traffic, with the formal inauguration set for early next year. The next stretch of the Circuito will go from Miches to Sabana de la Mar, another 39 km. This will open up overland access to the Los Haitises National Park and is a bonus for developers of new tourism projects in the Miches beach area. Many beaches along the road are not well known because of the difficult access.
Gansevoort's newest hotel is in Sosua
New to Puerto Plata this holiday season is the 48-suites Gansevoort Playa Imbert. This is the US chain's fourth hotel, the second in the Caribbean. They also operate a hotel in Turks & Caicos and two in New York City.
The Gansevoort Playa Imbert is the result of a conversion from a former condo building on Playa Imbert to a luxury small resort. Most suites are one and two-bedroom lofts but there are also three-bedroom apartments with private plunge pools and spacious terraces, and a collection of four-bedroom penthouses. The hotel promises great views and modern interior decor with state-of-the art amenities like a modern kitchen and walk-in showers.
A complete water sports program enables guests to book sailing on Hobie cats, kayaks, snorkeling, paddle boarding, kite boarding, surfing, scuba diving, and fishing, sailing and private catamaran excursions in Sosua-Cabarete. The hotel also offers tours to other attractions in the Puerto Plata area.
2014 was a great year for tourism
Tourism in the Dominican Republic is expected to end 2014 with 7% growth and a record number of visitors. But this is not the exception in the world. The United Nations World Tourism Organization says that more than 1.1 billion international tourists will have traveled the world in 2014, a new record. During the first ten months of the year, international travel was up 5%. By October 2014, the volume of overnight visitors had reached 978 million, or 45 million more than in the same period in 2013.
As reported, the strongest growth was registered in the Americas (+8), followed by Asia and the Pacific (+5%) and Europe (+4%). By sub-region, North America (+9%) and South Asia (+8%) were the star performers, as well as Southern and Mediterranean Europe, North-East Asia and Northern Europe (all +7%).
UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai commented: "These are remarkable results considering that different parts of the world continue to face significant geopolitical and health challenges, while the global economic recovery remains rather fragile and uneven".
"More importantly, we see a growing political commitment to the tourism sector in many countries. This is encouraging, not in the least because tourism is one of the sectors that is best able to deliver on employment at a moment when job creation need to be a priority to all", he added.
