Puerto Plata's art murals catch on
Amateur and professional artists are transforming the north coast, one mural at a time. A series of new public art murals is gracing walls around Puerto Plata and the nearby tourist destinations of Cabrera, Cabarete and Sosua. The murals have been painted along main streets and in residential areas. Puerto Plata already had two well-known murals, one by Checo Merette depicting humpback whales on the fuel tanks off the Malecon done in 2008 and another on the Antera Mota public school in the city. A new movement has inspired dozens more muralists with contemporary art now decorating the city.
The appearance of the murals coincides with the arrival of cruise ship passengers now that Carnival has opened its Amber Cove port at Maimon Bay, a 20-minute drive from the city center.
Murals started being painted in 2006 in the northern city of Salcedo, inspired by the heroism of the three Mirabal sisters, followed by another 100 murals in Villa Tapia, Salcedo and Tenares, including work by leading artists Elsa Nunez, Alberto Bass and the late Candido Bido, all of which can still be viewed.

Emotions Beach Resort opening in Juan Dolio
The Hodelpa hotel chain has announced the opening of the Emotions Beach Resort in Juan Dolio. The hotel's marketing director, Aura Nunez de Dominguez, says that they are confident about Juan Dolio's development. The area took a step back when residential tourism seemed to replace hotel stays in the area.
She said that the hotel has 293 rooms. Guests will receive a Colonial City day tour in Santo Domingo as part of the stay plans. The attractions of the Colonial City are just 45 minutes away.
She added that visitors have the option of arriving from Las Americas International Airport (half an hour from Santo Domingo) or Casa de Campo International Airport (15 minutes from La Romana), both around half an hour away in each direction. The hotel is scheduled to open this week, on Tuesday 11 November 2015.
Emotions Beach Resort is the former Capella Beach Resort.
DR makes US News' Travel Best of Caribbean List
The Dominican Republic has been included on two of the Best of Caribbean travel lists of the US News & World Report publication.
Puerto Plata and Punta Cana are both included the "Best Affordable Caribbean Destinations" list. Interestingly, the destinations are given the same weight as countries such as Puerto Rico, Curacao, Jamaica, Grenada, Dominica, US Virgin Islands, Barbados, and St. Kitts and Nevis.
The publication recommends a trip to Punta Cana:
"Thanks to a wealth of all-inclusive resorts, Punta Cana is an affordable haven for sun-worshippers. This resort town offers everything from pristine beaches and turquoise water to challenging golf courses and top-notch cuisine."
And to Puerto Plata:
"This Dominican Republic beach town offers plenty for those seeking off-resort activities. Here, you can enjoy water sports in Cabarete and jaw-dropping sights like the Damajaqua Cascades [sic]. And with daily nonstop flights from the U.S., getting to Puerto Plata is a cinch."
In the "beach bum" category, Punta Cana is on the Best Caribbean Beaches list.
